Help playing SFC:OP on Gamespy please
« on: August 05, 2008, 08:51:02 pm »
I'm going out of my mind. I've put my computer in DMZ, turned antivirus off, Firewall off, Windows firewall is always off, forwarded ports TCP/UDP 2300-2400 base port 47624. What else must I do to be able to connect and play over Gamespy?

I'm running XP service pack 2, have a Westell Versalink 327W router and have BitDefender as my antivirus software.

Any help would be REALLY appreciated. I'll promise to give you a 20 bpv advantage anytime you face me on Gamespy*

Welcome to Dynaverse Kitsune,

Do you have the right patch and mod? Currently, people on GSA use Patch 2552 and Firesoul's OP+ 4.0 shiplist. There patch should be installed over an unmodified SFCOP before the shiplist is installed.

Hopefully it's not your internet connection. I also use a router, but even with no ports forwarded Gamespy drops once in a while and I can't host, but it's still playable. Hope you get OP working soon, it's always good to get more player online.  :)

Make sure your internal and external IP addresses are the same.

Hi,

Yes, I have 2552 and 4.0.

My internal and exrternal IP are the same. I used to get a warning from Gamespy when trying to create a room because they were different but once I put my computer in DMZ they became the same and I no longer get the warning. However, I still can not see any games when the room creator launches, nor can anyone se mee when I launch.

Hmm, do you mean you can't see rooms in Gamespy itself, or after Gamespy launches and you are in the OP lobby?

Maybe you could pop into GSA tonight or some other time, and it can be fixed. I wouldn't mind doing some testing and should be on about 9 PM Eastern. Other people there have router troubles too, so they could help.

Sorry, I missed this reply. I'll be on tomorrow night and every night until I can get this thing working.

I mean when a game launches I never see the game in the screen where you are waiting to join together. I can see Gamnespy rooms fine.

You do have Windows Firewall service disabled as well as Universal Plug and play right?

You have to go to Start > Run > type in services.msc > click OK.. in the window that opens, find Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and right click, select properties, change from Automatic to Disabled.. do the same for Windows Firewall..

restart computer, then try hosting or joining a game..

Rooms sometimes take up to a min to appear, so be patient.

OK, I've turned those things off too. I'm going online to try again. Wish me luck.

[Edit]
Hm... Nobody there. Do you guys take Thursday nights off? No problem I'll be there all weekend since I could care less about the Olympics.

I would renable your firewall as I don't trust GameSpy for all the gold in the world as for thier ads unless you are subscriber but I never never turn off my firewall for anything.I don't want hacker in my system and it only take 5 min or less. You want to inlcude Gamespy is the exceptions tab of windows firewall. It doesn't take longer for hack to get into your system and once in they if you have any online stuff to do like banking they can steal your passwords and encrypted info. This is what firewalls are for and they do it when you are playing.

The Clans on GS are rare these days last I checked as it is mostly just used for traininng for the dyna.I always keep my firewall on as I play online games as well and don't want a hacker giving me a keylogger.

Yeah, I should be able to play with firewall and exceptions but right now I'm just turning everything off to try and get it working. If I get it working then I will re-enable things one at a time.

Attached is a picture of IP traffic during my attempt tonight to connect. I notice one of the ports SFc opened was 1952. In the online guide it doesn't mention that as a port that needs to be opened. Can someone give me the complete list of ports I should have opened? I also have my computer in the DMZ though so that should mean every port is open right? I really don't understand how this works. I had no trouble with the computer I had years ago when SFC series first came out.

[EDIT]
More clues. A player that tried to join a game I created said he could SEE my game but when he tried to join it just said "joining" and nothing happened. I still can not see others' games when SFC launches.

You don't need to use bitdefender as windows firewall is good enough along with windows defender unless this is with router and I don't know much about those.

Can you get on Teamspeak?   We can try a direct IP game to see if the issue is even GSA.

Well, I've been online with KEG-Butcher, who seems ot have the patience of a saint, for about 2 hours trying everything we can think of (and he's a systems network engineer) but no success. Static NAT, a ton of port forwarding tries, DMZ, and every modifiable setting in the router. Am I cursed? Is it this hard for everyone? I'm surprised anyone plays this game. I never had this trouble 8 years ago when I had cable. Routers suck!

What is your internet connection now dial up or high speed phone or cable? You might want to think of directing plugging into your modem instead of your router as well I would suggest playing on the Dyna the servers made here a great loads of fun and it is more fun at night when more are on or in the morning. The dyna is great and it is what SFC 2 is all about not playing on GameSpy as you can't make up servers which can be a lot of fun so hop on the dyna go over ot the D2 forum just plug directly into your modem while playing.

hate to say, I had a little trouble to start with, but it cleared up quickly and everything has been easy.  So hang in there, once you get in, the water is fine.

It isn't hard for everyone. Some ISPs just make it more difficult then others to connect, depending on your ISP and connection type. As well some routers make it more difficult then others as well to connect and maintain a connection.
one thing though,
Did you guys go over bridge mode on the modem (if DSL/Cable modem)? More modern modems have built in routing, making it where if you plug in a router, you basically just hooked up a router with another router with no RIP. It then becomes a big headache.
