When did you last?
« on: August 13, 2008, 09:45:24 am »
Do your computer maintenance

Defrag your HD?

Run a thorough Anti-Virus / Anti Malware scan?

Clean your fans and heat sinks?

Update your software?

This has been a public service announcement.[/color]

I run Fix_it pro with avanquest a/v on my machines and it's constantly nagging me to do all of the above.

The registry restore came in pretty handy last week when I managed to download a browser hijack / malware package from hell.

You can wipe the swap file?  How the hell do you do this?

Also, my swap file is always 1.5 gigs, even on a fresh install.

on XP, on the 'control panel/settings/system/advanced/performance/advanced' tab you'll see virtual memory settings, simply select 'no paging file', exit all these menus and reboot.

THEN go back to the virtual memory settings, select what you had before, exit and reboot.

I personally select 'custom' with the size as 1524 min and 3048 max on my E: drive (my second installed hard drive) as I've read windows performs better if your page file is NOT on the same hard drive as the OS.

LOL, I really do need to get one of those tiny Vac's to help with this. But yeah, I do most once a week or so. Ususaly on Tuesdays for Updates, Virus scans every night while I sleep, etc. etc.

Excersise extreme caution in disabling the page file, your system may not boot if there is insufficient physical memory.

A safer bet is to move the page file to a different drive with sufficient space, reboot, defrag the system disk, move the pagefile back and reboot.

If you do not have a second drive or partition to move the pagefile to, Then be sure you have enough RAM to boot with no pagefile.

I found long ago that my system was more stable so long as the swap file was on a separate partition from the OS.  So I got in the habit of setting up things so I always have a D: partition named swap.  All my machines since I started doing that have been far less crash prone.  It would be nice if Microsoft made doing so an automatic part of the installation of Windows.  I leave the C: exclusively to the Windows OS and have other partitions set up for Applications, Games and Data.

As well, a STATIC pagefile it better.
Min 3048 Max 3048

Some games will crash if Windows has to expand the page file in the middle of a game.

Pagefiles should be 1.5 times your total current RAM size

::sigh::

I thought this thread was going to be about something else.

The answer to that question is much too long.

running Mac and Linux Mint - both defrag automatically

anti-virus not necessary

clean fans....  errr....  the mini is mostly sealed so I can't get in but the fan has been noisy for the past year so I suppose I should find a way and the linux box...  yeah, I need to pull that baby apart too.

Mint got updated yesterday and I can't remember when the mini got it.
