SFC3 - Combat question
« on: August 10, 2008, 01:38:13 am »
Hi Everyone,

I really enjoy SFC3 but one thing I miss is the combat from sfc and sfc2. Specifically how it worked, for example how in sfc/sfc2 as you were fighting your weapons would need repair, warp core, transporters etc and as these system would get damaged your hull integrity would start to drop, but you could always recoup some of it or most of it again as you repaired your ship. If you barely survived the fight your ship would have limp home and if you were really ambitious you could attempt to find spare parts from planets/freighters or even from other warships if you engaged them and repaired your ship on the run. This aspect of the game was a lot of fun in my opinion and it's kind of been lost with SFC3. It seems your ship works almost perfectly until it's hull integrity is gone and then you're just dead. There seems to be no way to restore your hull integrity until you visit a starbase.

I the Sfc3 ship interchangeability and graphics (these are all major improvements over sfc/sfc2) but I really dislike the combat, is there a way to make sfc3 combat behave more like the sfc/sfc2 style?

Nope.  It's hardcoded into the game.  I wouldn't be surprised if Taldren would have incorporated more of what you're asking had they the time and chance to do so, but SFC3 was a very rushed game, and never got the consideration it deserved.

You can reduce the damage resistance of systems by modding in SFC3.  Unfortunetly, its still limited because a ship can still use the system until its disabled, which is very hard to do even when you do reduce the damage resistance.  I'm guessing this is because game allocates the damage mostly to Hull points instead of systems first so not all damage is applied to the systems.  You could reduce the hull point hits, but I think this also redcuces the mass of the ship in the game and can effect how you want the ships to fly.  Another problem is the Energy system in SFC3 is much different then SFC1/2.  Warp Cores power systems, while Impulse Engines only handle flight, and you can only allocate power to Sheilds or Weapons (in a very simplistic system).  This means even if your Warp Core is heavily Damaged, your Impulse Engines could still give you close to Max Speed. A much different design then the older Energy Allocation system of the older games.

I haven't messed with SFC3 in a while (mostly just SFC1, 2, or OP), it did have some neat features compared to the older games, but the combat system is vastly different to the older games.  They are really almost two different game systems.  So, to answer your question, I highly doubt you could make SFC3 combat similar to say SFC:OP.

transporting repairs ect was never turned on due to rush of game. Your officers do die and ship can take internals like if warp core goes black or dead you have no weapons ect.
