Some classics are so good that they should never be re-made.

Especially starring Keanu Reeves.

I have always wondered about the need of some film makers to remake four star movies. Do they actually think they can make it better? At best they can get a three star movie out of it. There's a reason the originals get four stars: The stories hold up over time and can be related to by anyone in any era. Reworking the plot to be more "socially relevant" for the time just shows lack of imagination on their part. Why not come up with your own story of an alien who visits to give warning and call it something else even if you steal the outline from The Day the Earth Stood Still. Some remakes of great movies are actually better than the original, but that's because the originals were usually silent (Ben Hur comes to mind).

Colour TVs have been around so long that there are people who won't even watch Black and White movies no  matter how much of a classic they are.  So there is some justification for doing remakes of black and white classics.   Some however used the black and white for cinematic effects that made the film a classic and should not be redone.

Personally I think they should either be strictly true to the original story or do a remake of the concept without using any of the original script.

Among the few remakes I can think of that bettered the original was The Thing and that was because it was more true to the original short story

I only have a thing against remaking really good movies. They can remake the bad ones all they like. The original Thing was a B movie that got a great make over. The Day the Earth Stood Still was a great movie at the time it came out. Remaking it is like remaking Forbidden Planet or 2001: A Space Odyssey. There's just no point.

*raises hand*

Although it's not just the fact that they were B&W... IMO the acting in those days wasn't all that great. They were all so wooden; the so called greats of the era all spoke like they were either reading straight from the script or they all had 3 foot sticks up the butt. (Kinda like Keanu Reeves in other words. :) ) Not to mention that every male actor sounded nearly identical.

I try to judge movies, books etc by the standards of the time they were written.  When older movies were done they were still evolving methods of acting and filming.  The early films were using acting techniques designed for the stage without microphones, amplifiers or proper acoustic design.  To judge them by modern standards is grossly unfair.

When you consider what they were working with some of the earlier films were brilliant and groundbreaking and deserve to be called classics for both their quality and the new techniques developed for them.  Compare Forbidden Planet to the typical SciFi movie of the 1950's and Forbidden Planet is head and shoulders above them.  Just like 1960's Star Trek raised the bar for Sci Fi TV shows and it was a long time before anyone raised the bar again.

I saw it and rate it as an ok timewaster. Casting and the pacing of the movie could have been better as the characters weren't believeable.
