SFC II on a Vista Laptop?
« on: August 02, 2008, 11:03:39 am »
Good Morning,

I have been trying for the past few days to install SFC II on a laptop that is (unfortunately) running Windows Vista.  I used to run it on an older Compaq Laptop with XP Pro that has long since died, and when I tried loading it onto my wife's desktop with the same OS, it won't work.  Now I am trying it on my Vista laptop, and it has the same problem as on her desktop: SFC II freezes up on the first note of the music to the opening movie in the Bink Video Player.

At least I can get that far with it... SFC I won't load at all with a kernel32 error coming up every time I try.

Can anyone here provide me with some guidance on how to make the game work?

Thanks,
Rob+

Have you tried the program compatibility wizard?

I have run the program under every compatibility setting offered in Vista, and the same thing keeps happening.  I can't get far enough to even think about Dynaverse because it stalls on the opening movie that plays in a Bink Video Player.  You hear one or two notes of the chiming music that opens the Intro Movie with Sulu's voiceover... but it won't display the Paramount logo or anything.  It does the exact same thing on my XP system as well.

I tried the suggestions offered in the other thread that Age shared, but I can't get that far.  It just plain keep stalling out on the video player.

PM Pestelence, he's the resident expert on getting Vista to work.   Bad news though is Dyna will never work right, GSA can work fine.

You playbing OP or EAW?   EAW has faded into obscurity.

Ok, but when you use the compatibility wizard are you doing so against the install CD?

EAW.  I never got the chance to get OP, and never had the time at that point in my life to dedicate to the game.

EDIT UPDATE:  I went and reapplied the settings to the CD, and had the same result, so hit CTL+ALT+DEL to open the control panel.  When I did, I inadvertantly hit SWITCH USER.  I clicked myself back in, and the audio of the movie played with a black screen.  When the audio ended, that was it.  No game.  Same result after trying it on the installed program.

Have you tried just skipping the video by editing the shortcut to point to *installdir*\StarFleet2.exe ?  (add the start-in folder too)

Same fix goes for XP these days too.

I gave him detailed instructions via PM on how to configure EAW to work on Vista since I am using Vista myself and have no problems running either game in GSA or single player or TCP/IP

D2 however is still a problem.. but if Father Rob has a copy of XP full install lying around, I can give him my guide for Dual Booting his system and he can use his laptop to join the D2 under the XP environment.

game files never fixed .. sfc.exe ... sfc2.exe ... sfcop.exe  all these files were never patched or repaired and are broken.. you must use the main exe file to launch the game

starfleet.exe   .   starfleet2.exe  ...  starfleetop.exe

the installation shortcuts to launch the game were buggy upon release and were never fixed.
