FireFox crashing on Vista
« on: July 11, 2008, 08:46:48 am »

QUESTION:
I am having mixed luck installing Firefox3 in Vista SP1. It runs fine on every XP, but about 50/50 on Vista. All high quality Intel based systems. On 2 identical, brand new Dell 530s, one runs it no problem, the other will appcrash immediately after install. Most frustrating is it crashes on my main machine but runs fine on my smaller screen backup system. Have you heard of this from any other subscribers? - Jon B.

ANSWER:
We're hearing about problems with Firefox 3 stability from many people. The first step in troubleshooting would be to try running it in Safe Mode (it's an option in the Start Menu, or you can launch it from the command line by typing:

firefox.exe -safe-mode

If it doesn't crash in Safe Mode, the problem is likely an add-in or extension. Try disabling them all and then enabling them one at a time (go to Tools | Add- ons | Plugins, or Tools | Add-ons | Extensions) to find which one is causing the problem.

You can also try creating a new profile. To do that, at the command prompt type:

firefox.exe -profilemanager

Click the Create Profile button.

A corrupted cache can also cause crashes. Click Tools | Clear Private Data and clear out the cache and other data.

Another known culprit: old versions of the Google toolbar.

If all else fails, you might try uninstalling and then reinstalling Firefox. Also, check out this page on the Firefox support web site:
