I keep it as a secondary browser, where if IE doesn't work on a site, Firefox probably will.

IE 8 can view any site.. it has a button at the top that says Emulate IE7, which puts it into non compliance mode.. this mode you would use 90% of the time when viewing the web.. if a site looks weird or broken in IE7 mode, unselect the button , close the window, open the windows again, and go back to the site.. the site will show up correctly now since the browser will be in IE8 mode or "compliance mode". Emulate IE7 button puts the browser into "Non Compliance mode" for the rest of the web coded for older versions of IE.

Got rid of FireFox three months ago.  After an update, it started locking up my computer.  I don't need that.

It was released on the 17th. Months ago you would have been running a beta or release candidate which you can expect to be unstable.

I put FF on my old rig for a week.. FF2 I believe.. and within a week, I had 2 Viruses.. not something to convince me to switch over.. now that IE 8 is Acid 2 compliant, and is being patched up for Acid 3 for the Final Release.. FF still has a long way to go.. IE was Acid 2 before FF and IE will be Acid 3 before FF.. and if Safari can't get things together soon, IE will pass them up as well.

Oh come on. we are all too old for ACID.

My favourite browser is QNX's Voyager. I still have a copy of Mosaic on my hard disk...  Lynx is up there too, and OMG ITS NOT ACID compliant! How could I think of using it!! (All in good fun Pestalence - just a little perspective.)

Correlation is not causation re your virus experience. Though I sympathise, because I see ICQ that way from back in 99.

I can use almost any browser securely. Security, when it comes to IE vs FF at this point depends mostly on the user and their familiarity with the product.

Well firefox CAN reconstruct some missing code that IE cannot
(I.E. <-- **** --> HTML comment system, if your missing <--  firefox will reconstruct that, while IE will not)
While IE can run certain sites that firefox cannot either..

The question here is was he saying "Got rid of FireFox V3,  months ago." or "Got rid of FireFox, 3 months ago. ". 

If he was referring to the V3 then you are right.  If he was referring to the time period 3 months then you are wrong.   In either case he might consider trying it again now that the V3 release is here. Up to him really.  Just as I could have tried IE again once I changed out the hardware it was incompatible with, but I was happy with Mozilla then Firefox so why bother?  Now that most of my browsing is on Linux that of course won't happen.  He may well be in the "I'm happy with IE so why bother?" category just as I was with Mozilla and am with Firefox.  When and if he feels the need for something Firefox offers that IE does not provide he can try it again if he wishes.

Myself I'm waiting for V3 to enter the repositories I use for LinuxMint before I update my main machine.  My gaming machine is now updated but I haven't used it much for browsing sinxe last August.  Sometime this weekend I'll update my mothers Windows machine to V3 as well.

I now have all my addons updated. It feels much better in most ways than FF2. I'm loving the new keyhole design for the Back/Forward buttons, especially with the Phoenity theme. All-In-One Sidebar and Tab Mix Plus (FF3 Beta) work well, and ImageBot seems to load faster too. Also, IE Tab allows me to switch to IE8 inside a tab if I need to.

Even with the issues some people have been having, Micro$oft should take some lessons, rather than just doing this:

Sorry, for not being clear, I would have used a comma if I had meant, "Firefox 3, months ago."  Then again, I still post with incorrect punctuation and spelling errors all the time, so how can you tell?  I've had problems with non-IE browsers locking up my computer, but would really like another browser that I could use surfing the more dangerous parts of the web.  It's not that I fear security problems with IE, I just don't want cookies from site like this one to mingle with cookies from sites that may be run by thieves.  The last time I ran Firefox, it locked up my computer with only three windows open.

Firefox3 supposed to be stable?  Maybe I'll give it another try.

Have you considered using a Linux Live CD for browsing "questionable sites"?

The advantage of such a thing is that you don't need to install them and each time you reboot it is "fresh" and uncontaminated.  When experimenting with LinuxMint I used the bootable CD to browse online without installing.  You can also install some of them to a USB Key (aka thumbdrive, though I found it slow when I tried that with LinuxMint).

(Ubuntu is just one of many variants if you don't like Ubuntu you can use others.)

Another possibility is to try our something like Portable Apps. It runs all sorts of programs from a flash drive, CD even an iPod. And when you use FF3 it doesn't place any files on the hard drive. In fact, at no times do any files get added to the hard drive from any of the portable programs.

I mostly use FF for big image sites IE can't handle and I use IE mostly for downloading.

PCPro has an interesting breakdown on their users and the rate of upgrade for both Firefox and IE.  It seems that Firefox users upgrade to the newer version quicker. 

Here’s the breakdown of Firefox browser versions visiting www.pcpro.co.uk this week:

1. Firefox 3.0 - 55.13%
2. Firefox 2.0.0.14 - 39.27%
3. Firefox 2.0.0.11 - 0.96%

And for comparison, here’s the breakdown for Internet Explorer:

1. Internet Explorer 7 - 68.86%
2. Internet Explorer 6 - 30.97%
3. Internet Explorer 8 - 0.09%

I'm still on Firefox 2.0.0.14 as I wait for Firefox 3 to enter the software repository for my version of Linux.  I do have it updated on my Windows machine but don't use it much.

I've been using Firefox 3 for about week now and it seems pretty good, not as fast as people claim but still a good program.  I do like the bigger back button, nice touch.
