Dynaverse over LAN
« on: July 04, 2008, 12:38:35 pm »
Hello!

Awhile back I browsed this forum quite regularly and I took a long break from the game and now watching all the ST movies on DVD has resurrected my interest in the game. We have a 5 computer setup here at the house, and after 10 or so games of standard LAN skirmish play, it feels too...basic...I dont know. We were going to try to play F&E (the board game) and then sim the battles through SFC but we figured there were too many issues. What we really want is to try and get the Dynaverse running over our local LAN (I found an old thread about this, but it directs the poster to a page on the "old forums" which seemed to be inaccessible http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,1634304.msg1122274324.html). I was just wondering if anyone thinks this is possible. I know that D2 servers need to be authenticated through the central WON server (which is now located here correct?)  and we do have a DSL line so this is possible. I just need to know what serverkit and clientside changes are necessary for this to work. We have SFCII-OP and latest patches/serverkit. If anyone has any information on this matter I would be very thankful. Please help me and my friends out! Thank you very much again.

It's not possible, sorry.

It is, I have done it, but you'd need a copy of the directory servers, and we can't give that out.

You just set up the directory server to listen locally only, then configure the clients to look for it on the lan IP, pretty simple.

I think there may be a hook for it somewhere without the directory server though, as when I used to run two servers behind one router (one on 27100, and the other on 28100) it would often list them both twice at the serverlist when viewed locally, but only once when viewed from a remote location. I did a little packet sniffing and indeed one is the lan IP and the other is the WAN IP... it is built in somewhere... login to either and the server always sees the LOCAL client IP no matter what

...but gamespy authentication (grrr whose idea was that?) makes it a pain, you still need the directory server to be connected to the net so it can verify gamespy logins, I believe I hacked this once out in the woods by writing a server to give a valid gamespy login no matter what and just edit the hosts file on the clients to point to this instead of gamespy. (or it may have been a directory server config hack, I don't recall...)

It is possible, but not allowed.

I knew that, but I didn't know we were allowed to say that in an open forum :)

Oops!  Perhaps we're not. I'm pretty sure I already have described this elsewhere anyway, honesty is the best policy, it earns the most respect and understanding. Frey can beat me with a wet noodle if he feels he must. ;)

Gamespy auth...aka- "cdkey check"? Or just run of the mill gamespy account check?

:police:Private LAN Server = Mutara Sector? :police:

I'm not asking for the launch codes (read: directory server) or anything I was just asking if there was any way to do it with the given tools. Big Time Disappointment. Thanks anyways.
