Slightly OT - IL2 Skins
« on: June 07, 2008, 12:37:27 pm »
Anyone here play IL-2?   Anyone ever do a skin for it?   I would like either someone to make me a couple of custom skins, and/or show me how I can take one skin made by you, and convert it to other skins for other planes.

Basically I want to take the idea of basically an armored knight and try and apply that to the plane skin, with my name and what not.

I do. If you have Photoshop or PSP you have a couple of sites like simmers paintshop, mission4today, etc. which have templates for most planes.

So if I get the template, and use PS or PSP, is there a Shiney Metal texture I can use to represent the shiney armor?

You might look at a few P-40 or the P-51 and P-47 templates on simmers paintshop, they have baremetal versions of their skin done. But it must be clear to you that you can mostly only simulate the effects that materials make, the rest can be left up to the sim's graphics engine.

For example (altho my graph card sucks for any type of advanced lightning), these are two of my personal P-51 skins:

You may be in danger of over-weathering.  Remember, those planes were new back in 1944-45.  They were dazzlingly shiny.

The most numerous among my personal skins are for the Bf-109 variants, so then guess which plane is my fav in that game (minus the Dora) :P

I like the Dora too...very nimble and in the right hands more than a match for any Allied plane.

The ME-109 is a splendid plane but by 1944 was being outclassed by such aircraft as the Tempest, the Mustang, and the Typhoon just to name three.
