Vista 64bit vs SFC2:OP F T L
« on: June 11, 2008, 12:17:36 am »
Just a quick note to the few people running Vista 64bit.

I have just installed Orion Pirates (Best Game Ever) and attempted to some old school mod updates.  I believe it was the P81 D2 HR mod.  Bad times, kids.

Vista 64bit adds a cute little addition to the old file structure.  It 'analyzes' which program is 64 bit or 32 bit and then assigns it one of two neat little folder options.  C:\program files <-- 64 bit proggies default here  C:\program files (x86) <-- 32 bit programs go here.  Note that MANY community supported patches and mods will default to program files even though the orig proggie installed to program files (x86).

What The Frak!?!

AND... furthermore...

Hey, Man...

How does it feel to be second best?  I mean, I was with your Mom last night and it turns out you were the second largest thing she has had in her birth canal.

PPS No disrespect to Stoney's Mom.  Or her Birth Canal.
PPPS  Maybe this should have been in another forum?  Hmm.

Installation Instructions (Windows Vista) :

On systems still in default out of box condition:

1. Log on to machine as Administrator and make sure UAC is enabled.

2. Disable Anti-Virus for the remainder of the steps.

3. Make sure that your drivers for your sound card and video card are the latest version. Please check with the manufacturer of your cards for the proper drivers.

4. Make sure you are running the latest Microsoft Updates for your computer from the Windows Update site, including all the "Additional Content" which will help your system run much smoother. To update your system completely, check your Windows Update settings to see if you are including all content, not just critical updates. Use your Windows Update manual control in control panel under System and Maintenance. Click on Windows Update, and check settings in order to get ALL updates. After updating and restarting, continue to next step. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE VISTA SP 1 INSTALLED !

5. Install Orion Pirates from game CD. To install, exit the installer window brought up by Autorun, and go into My Computer, right click on your disk drive containing the SFC_OP CD and click Explore, right click on Setup.exe and select Run as Administrator. Say no to DirectX and Gamespy Arcade installs. If you want Gamespy Arcade.. Download the current version from www.gamespyarcade.com.

6. Install the game patch v2.5.5.2 by right clicking the patch EXE file and selecting Run as Administrator, and then install the Directory Server Update by right clicking the directory server EXE file and selecting Run as Administrator. Both files are found on the Dynaverse.net Downloads section. click the banner at the top of the forums to go to main page, then navigate to the downloads section for Orion Pirates.

7. Re-enable your Anti-Virus. Please make sure that the patching completed first. If a file installs incorrectly UAC will notify you and ask you to reinstall using recommended settings. If this happens, say Yes.

8. Do not use Windows Firewall and preferably not Norton or McAfee for AV or Firewall (these are now considered viruses by 90% of the computing world), Use AVG or Panda for AV and Black Ice or Zone Alarm or a hardware firewall like a router !!! If using Firewall software or router - TURN OFF MICROSOFT OR WINDOWS FIREWALL - Turn it off and disable the service. You will need to configure your 3rd party firewall ports for OP according to Gamespy Arcade and the following firewall settings:

If you are behind a router/firewall you will need to forward ports 2300-2400 TCP&UDP and 47624 TCP to login. (allow pings from the WAN) Port forwarding applies to a static LAN config. The following site may be of assistance in this: http://www.portforward.com/

Some ADSL and cable modems have router capabilities in them that the ISP does not tell you about and often poorly understand themselves.

Do not ever use a software firewall when you have a router.. bad things happen with games.

9. Go to your Orion Pirates Directory and right click on it. Select Properties and click OK. At the bottom you will see a black box in Read Only. Uncheck this and click OK. A window will pop up asking if you want to do this to the folder only or all files and folders. check all files and folders and click OK.

10. Right Click on the folder again and select properties. Click on Security Tab. Click Edit and change each user to Full Control. Click OK. This will ensure that Mod Chooser and EZINI, or the SFCOP Configuration Utility will work correctly.

11. Go into the Directory and find all the EXE files, right click, select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab, put check mark into Compatibility Mode and select XP SP 2 and put a check into Run as Administrator. Click OK.

12. On your desktop, right click on each of the shortcuts and verify that all of them have XP SP 2 compatibility mode enabled and that they have Run as Administrator checked. The only exception to this is Model Viewer. Make sure it is in Windows 2000 compatibility mode andRun as Administrator is checked.

13. Next, find StarfleetOP.exe and right click. Seclect COPY. Right click on your desktop and select "Paste Shortcut". This is the icon you will use to launch SFC OP game.

14. Next download and install the DirectX 9 files that are missing from Vista. These files are in a zip file. You will need to physically extract them and move them into your Windows\System32 Folder (x86 version and x64 version) and your SysWOW64 Folder (x64 version only).

http://warpcore.110mb.com/Downloads/Added_DirectX_Vista.zip

15. Download and install the latest DirectX Redistributable package (not the web installer) in order to make sure all your Vista DirectX files are up to date and correct. Current release is March 7, 2008 and is 69.5 MB

16. Launch game from Desktop Shortcut and Enter CD Key (Include dashes).

17. Enjoy Playing.

***** NOTE :

1) Do not disable User Account Control (UAC) for any reason. To get UAC to stop being annoying, Download TWEAKUAC and set UAC to Quiet mode. this will ensure your system remains secure without annoying prompts.

2) Empires at War and Orion Pirates on Vista systems will work for Single Player, Gamespy Arcade and TCP/IP or LAN connections. Dynaverse 2 game play lags badly on the server. Dynaverse 2 is still not compatible with Vista based game clients due to poor network coding of the game as well as DirectX 7 and DirectX 9 incompatibilities which Vista does not recognize. Vista only works properly coded software correctly for network connections and EAW/OP have freelance code which will not work with Vista on the Dynaverse 2 servers due to Vista requiring programs to be coded using industry standards, which leaves EAW/OP out. *****

Any programs, Mods, etc... that you want to install on Vista for SFC titles, you will have to right click and select Run as Administrator for it to install correctly into the game.

Do these instructions take into account what Starkiller's post was about, I.E

The different locations Vista x64 will install a 32 bit app to?

How do NSIS installers (OP+4,SFB-OP...) respond on Vista 64, do they pick up the correct folder? They should pick up the folder you installed the game to...

It follows the registry keys, if you have NSIS looking for the install directory by way of registry keys.

Every program on Vista defaults to the program files (x86) folder unless the program is a true 64 bit program, then Vista will install to Program Files.

Not very many programs fall into the 64 bit category.

Take Crysis, it installs 32 bit and 64 bit, however the install directory defaults to program files (x86) for both the 32 and 64 bit versions since most of the program is 32 bit to begin with. the system can still use the 64 bit code from the program files (x86) folder..

If the program is completely 64 bit such as Hellgate London, then it will install to the Program Files directory.

So, a program will default to program files (x86) unless the program is true 64 bit or unless the installer is directed to a different directory other than program files (x86) using registry keys.

Cool, as I expected. OP+4 and SFB-OP both get the OP install location from its registry entry.

Okay, I'm not able to figure something out, I follow it right up till these steps

I think it's step 15 I'm not doing right...though it may be step 14.

OK.. Step 14 is a zip file that i have on my web site.. it contains missing DX 8 files that allows OP to run smoother.. They are not necessary as Vista will Emulate DX 8 for OP Single Player.. but on benchmarking.. I have found FPS much better when you do add them.

Just DL the pack, unzip to a different folder, then open your Windows\System32 folder and copy the files over.. If you get any files that ask "Do you want to replace" make sure you pick the newer file. the file description will have (Newer) at the end.. watch for this..

Do the same for the Windows\SysWOW64 folder.

Step 15, You want to get the DirectX IT Installer from Microsoft.. current version is June, 2008

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=822640AB-0983-4C41-9C70-632F6F42C557&displaylang=en

When you run the EXE, it will ask you for a location to extract to.. I usually create a new folder on my desktop and allow it to extract there..

Once the file is extracted completely, go into the new folder and find Setup.exe .. this will launch the DirectX installation and will reinstall and register all the DirectX files for DX 9 and DX 10.. Once it is done installing, I usually delete the folder and the installer/extractor to free space.. it is a big file.. and then restart my system

It will not register the DX 8 files you added.. however, OP calls those files using Windows API.. so you shouldn't have to worry about registering the DX files.

Once you have all the steps done correctly.. Vista should work with GSA and OP, OP and TCP/IP connections and OP Single Player mode with 0 issues.

Dynaverse 2 is still having issues and I am still continuing to work for a solution on that end..

Okay, I think I narrowed it down, for some reason the DX setup was only like 7KB instead of 74MB.
