You said you'd be gone 3 or 4 hours, it's been considerbly more, almost 24, and we have no fracking idea of what's going on and if or when ATOK4 will be back up.
Can you at least let us know something?

I'm not sure what part of "the community" you're refering to, but it seems to me some did give a damn, since they showed up, some even offered to host or whatever to help...

Keep in mind it was only up a short time before issues arose. Could have been that people were busy or had plans, etc, and couldn't play at that time. Maybe with all the server issues of late, they wanted to make sure it was stable before dedicating serious time to play (ie: the Forge).

Since there hasn't been a major campain in ages, not having this one go  regardless of the player numbers will no doubt doom this game.
I for one would not like to see that happen. If there is only 4 a side, who cares, lets give'er! ;D  We've all flown together in the early years, possibly from the old Starlance matches and up, so lets do this and have some fun!  ;)

I planned on logging on today...  :'(  it had only been a day.  I was @ a baseball game yesterday or I would have logged on right @ noon.  no worries dh.  you've done more than I have.  I'm just a player not a dev or host.  hats off to you for even trying.

For what it's worth DH, a bunch of us checked in a few times but hit the blank server list issue then got wrapped up in other things  (building a #$%@%! swingset in my case).  The efforts aren't unappreciated!

well just got home from vacation late last night or i would have been on also. Im glad this is getting worked out ty . TY DH for even trying i helped admin a series of servers years ago and know what you are going thru. TY pesty for helping out. Now if we could just get someone to rewrite the installer so it works correctly all would  be golden.

It's there.  I'm on it.  Crisis averted.  Thanks for all your efforts, DH and Pesty.  I don't necessarily approve of Krueg's approach here, but to some degree those of us that showed up at launch were despairing at seeing the server going forward at all.

DieHard please don't forget that not everyone is skilled at posting diplomatically and not everyone understands the time, effort and creativity that goes into hosting a server (not to mention the expense).  Some think that running a server or a message forum takes no more effort than running other programs, like a browser or office software.  You and I know just how wrong they are.

Then there are those of us who do understand and appreciate it.  I myself before the internet took off ran a BBS and saw a lot of people who had no clue criticizing myself and other system operators and asking the impossible (or extremely expensive).  I appreciate your efforts and have taken care not to "jostle your elbow".  Others do as well. 

Please don't let the undiplomatic and uncomprehending discourage you with their messages.

OK.. let's settle down..

I have AOTK4 up and running on Warp Core and everyone is welcome to get on board.. All I ask is that someone take over scoring and the RM's do their job since I can mostly just run the server since I have it in flatfile mode currently.

I will get with Frey tonight and see if we can get SQL up on Freeja since Thor is down and then find a good time to transfer it.. however for the time being.. next day or so.. I will have it on Warp Core continously.. Sever kit is running on Vista 64 bit.. and should be very stable with my hardware config.

Just follow the current posted rules from DieHard.. that is all I ask.. No forfeiting and no Alt-F4 please to maintain database stability.

ok ran a mission and drafted another player in it things went smoothly the dv dropped by 1 as it should on this server  and we got a fair amount of pp for the mission so far it looks good. TY all for all you  hard work and time spent on this.

Actually you were not being nice.  You were complaining because you were not getting something for nothing as you expected.

Could DieHard have been more diplomatic?  Yes.  In his defense he has far more reason to be frustrated and annoyed than you do as he woke up to find problems and a list of complaints.

Do you have any personal experience running a server or message forum?  Have you ever put out that amount of effort freely for the pleasure of others KNOWING that you would be hearing lots of complaints from a loud minority and little in the way of compliment or aid from those who do appreciate your efforts?  If not then you don't know just how frustrating that it can be to come back to what you thought would be a smoothly running system only to have to deal with "issues" and complaints. 

I for one do know and I appreciate DieHards efforts.  I can only hope that he will not give them up because of your complaints.

I'm sorry if I didn't realize you'd be unavailable all evening, that wasn't the impression you gave me on TS and I apologize for seeming crisp with my post.
Several, including myself waited hours for some word on the Status of the server, I even tried contacting some XC admins to look at Thor, unaware it was having hardware issues, and that also stirred up things unwittingly.
I do have an idea of the work involved in these things, and I'm not insensitive to RL things that may take precedence over them.
*sigh*
I hope we still see you around, you are a valuable member of this community.

You needn't worry about me- you won't be bothered with me anymore.

You have to understand that the Server (or System) Operator cannot be there constantly and things WILL go wrong.  They don't have a staff there at all times to handle issues.  The Operator does it all on the time he can spare from his own life.  For a server Operator that can mean that for YOU and I to play means he can't as he is handling those "issues" that come up and responding to complaints.  It also means that when the Operator gets a chance to check things they can have a day or more of problems and complaints and escalating tempers to deal with all at the same time and with only a limited time to do it.  That gets frustrating and difficult and not everyone handles the pressure well.

Consider.  If YOU were disappointed merely because you expected to be able to play at a given time, how much MORE was Diehard disappointed to find his hard work not operating and the complaints piling up?

Even when things go wrong the Server Operators deserve thanks for their efforts and praise for even trying.  Not complaints.  Point out flaws and issues to them yes, but be nice and don't forget the thank yous for the efforts they make.

im with you DH...with the SFC4 announcement i would have thought there'd be a better turnout...but what can you do...it is what it is...

those of us that play and are reallying looking forward to this "serious" server totally appreciate the effort...the disappointing and harsh remarks are evidence of this...may i suggest next time we have a longer "test run"...we might have averted this situation...

i really favor having 2 people...like DH and Pesty...or Pesty and Braxton...SFHQ and DH...for admins on any given server...that way when situations like yesterday arise they can hopefully...between the 2...resolve the situation in a timely manner...

there were a few people who showed up yesterday with problems other than having no server to play on...who said they would try again tomorrow...one of them i have not seen in a long time...so no server would have been bad IMO...glad this was resolved...

DH,. your hard work is truly appreciated. the fact that  you only saw 4 on your sever is in account that most could not get there.  I am totally pissed that your beta version has corrupted my game and I am not able to even load it anymore.  I am however gratefull that you have tried to fill a void. thx.

Uninstall of the AOTK4 Beta installer will remove your Shiplist, frtlist and Model.siz files and the ED scripts and the NW scripts.. You will probably have to manually restore them..

I am about to put up a complete installer that will install and uninstall correctly that will keep your game in original condition after uninstall.

if ur like me and have the game files not on C drive...with DHs installers you just need to copy from C to whatever drive you have the game on...been this way for awhile...mentioned this a few times...

but thanks to pesty this has been resolved...

Same here.  I have a partition just for games but the installer defaulted to the C:. Even after I used the option to redirect it still put them on C: so I manually moved them.

The new installer detects install based on system registry as well as restores game to original (OP + v4.0) upon uninstall.

I'm just glad it's up, and I will be on this week.  (I had family plans for this weekend, so I couldn't be on at the scheduled launch).

Building a server is a *lot* of work even before you launch it, so I'm grateful to DH for putting this one together even if he has no more to do with it.  Now we have a server built and ready to run.

And a very special thanks to Pesty for taking over.  Good save, my friend.

There, I think I've gotten all the touchy-feely estrogen out of my system for a bit.  Damn, too many women in my house these days......

Even when things go wrong the Server Operators deserve thanks for their efforts and praise for even trying.  Not complaints.  Point out flaws and issues to them yes, but be nice and don't forget the thank yous for the efforts they make.

comment I wouldn't be bothered so much, but everyone who knows DH knows he's got a potty mouth- so I KNOW exactly what he wrote before he edited it, I remember a tiff we had about 18 months ago on TS and I vowed THEN never to speak or write to him again. I must have forgot about my promise to myself. So that behind us I've been thinking about it for the last 24 hours and have decided I want nothing more to do with his BS so I won't be participating on this server and I've notified LK to NOT expect me to help. I've removed all OP software from my PC as well as all the mods needed for the server.  It's all I can do to NOT request my account termination from Dyna as my hope is to forget this incident over time but that may take a few months.

In the mean time hope it goes well for you all, and maybe someday we'll ALL forget about this.
