Anyone know of a work around for....
« on: May 22, 2008, 06:25:15 pm »
As the title says, anyone know of a workaround that will allow me to use MAX 3.1 on Vista? When I try to use it it says Hardware lock drivers are not installed, then says hardware lock or drivers are not installed. HELP!!!!! :P

Vista and the license server (cdilla) are incompatible.

Glad to see you finally back on.  :D

There is a couple of workarounds, but you need to have a copy of XP still around.

a) If you still have your old machine, you can make a virtual machine out of it and run it under VMWare.  That should allow you to run Max 3.1 under the XP virtual machine.

b) Dual-booting under XP and Vista is an option.. Pesty posted a message on it not too long ago..

Get ahold of me if you go Option A..

Problem with Option A is that you are limited to 8mb of memory for Video since it emulates on your computer RAM.. none of your actual hardware is being used and it leaves you completely hindered in performance and capabilities..

Dual Booting is the beat way to go since you have full use of all your hardware on both OS systems all in 1 box..

If you don't have XP, I would recommend buying a full install copy ASAP because XP comes off the market June 31, 2008.

My Dual Boot guide is located in the Engineering forum stickied at the top..

As for the older Max programs.. CDilla does not have a work around for Vista as of yet.. I have been looking, but no one has reverse engineered CDilla to work on Vista as of yet.. sorry.

Yet ANOTHER reason not to upgrade to Vista.

I'm actually still using W2000...last stable OS build IMO. Both XP and Vista are train wrecks, but Vista now takes the prize as the worst operating system ever released in human history lol.

Problem with both of them was Explorer.exe.. I replaced Explorer as the shell in Windows 95 (the least stable other than Millenium) with Litestep, and then kept Windows 95 up and running until it reached it's limit of 69 days when it rebooted itself.  (Problem in the core kernal).

98's Explorer was more stable, but if you replaced it with Litestep as well, it also became more stable.

But I also agree with Raven.. my laptop is also running Windows 2000.  :)

My work laptop is running XP, and they'll have to drag me kicking and screaming to use Vista at work.  Because I know it's going to break a lot of the stuff that I use on a daily basis.

And when they push to replace XP on the remote sites, all of a sudeen they're going to have some serious problems with printers, apps, and applications.  (Some of their apps still need DOS printer support, not to mention serial support).

My personal opinion:  XP has problems, Vista is garbage, and Windows 2000 is the best option if it's available.  So Windows versions (in order of my preference)  Windows 2000, Windows 98SE (with Litestep), Windows XP, Windows 95 (with Litestep), Windows 98SE (w/o Litestep), Windows Vista SP1, Windows 95 (w/o Litestep), Windows Vista Gold.

Add in PCLinuxOS w/Wine to the mix as a sub for Windows 98SE (with Litestep).

That sort of thing can be obnoxious, but as long as one can use another modeling program to bridge the formats, there shouldn't be any problem.  What is important is that you have a program that works for you.

.. as long as Max 9 will let you export to .3ds, then at that point, the file can be converted into .MOD by someone or other..

More my concern is that the trial will expire and then you'll be stuck without a copy again.  :p

I did this, I had ver 5.. then when i was scouring for tutorials and buying video lesson dvd's i was finding they where using features that went beyond 5...  version 2009 is soo much different to 5, and so much better, im still using 9 atm, and waiting for 2009 to come in through the post, i love my autodesk subscription lol...

But yeah, try not to get too stuck with 9 dude. cos when you play with it, the uvw mapping will throw you at first then you will see why it changed and how good it is, version 9 came with n-powers pro booleans bundled in, Just remember to remove the faces then boolean, as it has a nasty habit of removing vertices that you may need..  but no more dissapearing objects with a pro boolean.

Good luck man.
