While I want a physical model, a virtual one is appeling as well, but it's hard to say that I built it when it's virtual. Also does it cost to get a virtual model, cause I'm a broke 15-year old redneck who like Star Trek.

Well, there are several ways to get a 3D model made.

First is the most common one, make it yourself.  For some people it's easy.  Natural talent.  For others, like me, learning the basics can be a bitch.

Second is to have a friend that can make it for you.  If you're able to get to know the right people in these communities, it's possible, but it won't be fast.

Third, you pay someone to make one for you.  I've seen some people make 3D models for around a few hundred dollars, to upwards of a few thousand.  It all depends on the person you hire to make the model for you, how detailed you want the model, and other factors I can't think of right now.

The pen is truly mightier than the sword.  And considerably easier to write with.

LOL.. most modelers on this board do models for free.. Besides.. by Paramount and Trek Licensing, if a Modeler makes a model with Trek material, and puts it up for download, it is free to the world, unless it is copy written by a game developer or publisher.

Paramount's Trek license states all artwork (including 3D renders) that are related to Star Trek or use Trek copy written or trademarked material are automatically property of Paramount Studios and shall be distributed by law as free share... Meaning no one can charge the public for downloading it.. Unless it was created under specific licensing of Paramount Studios, CBS Studios, Viacom or Trek Licensed Publisher.

Making the model on the other hand is up in the air.. Someone can charge for a model to be made that does not have Trek Trademarked or copy written material on it.. that is unless they want to pay Paramount, Viacom, and CBS or any other entity (Quicksilver, ADB, Various artists for Trek books, game developers, game publishers etc.) royalties on the render. If they are charging for Copy written material or trademarked material as licensed by Paramount, CBS, Viacom, etc.. they should be reported to Paramount so they can collect royalties on their License.

Making a model with Trek Copy written or trademarked material put out for download is, by law, suppose to be free to the public.

That doesn't mean a Modeler can't accept a donation for their time and hard work (not a forced donation either, it has to be volunteered).. but the modeler can't charge for copy written material.

That is something to think about..

Best thing to do is check Battle Clinic and see if a model you are thinking of has already been made and just download it from there.

In the case of Starfleet Command.. here is an excerpt from the EULA of the Orion Pirates game.. Notice the bold print.. It states derivative works, which includes models.

I'm not sure, but I think he's asking for a physical model.  You know, like ERTL, with glue and paint and stuff.

If that is the case.. Anyone can charge to assemble a physical model or make one from scratch.. that they can negotiate behind closed doors.. If someone is interested in doing a physical model.. it should be communicated by email or PM when discussing finances.

You can charge for your labor. It has nothing to do with IP. You aren't actually selling the model.

There are the models available for SFC made by the community.  Those can be downloaded free by anyone, mainly at Battleclinic and SFC3Files.com.

There are also sites that have CGI level models.  The best known one is www.scifi-meshes.com.  There are some tutorials on that site as well.
