What would you like to see in the NEXT version of Windows?
« on: April 27, 2008, 08:21:05 am »
There are several features that I would like to see and some that I would like to NOT see.

1/ Modular.  Integrating everything into one complex mass is a mess and needs to be changed.

2/ Specifications for non core modules so that "features" can be replaced by 3rd party suppliers without reducing compatibility.

3/ The ability to totally leave out undesired modules.  (for example IE and Media player)

4/ Installable file systems (including 3rd party ones).  This was once touted as a feature of Windows NT if I recall correctly.  Some file systems are designed and optimized for specific types of work and ti would be nice to be able to use them rather than the "one size fits all" NTFS.  As part of this copy from Linux (where Linux got it I am unsure) the concept of a swap partition isolated from installed programs.

5/ Remove the DRM.

6/  A new logo system whereby software that bears the logo is designed to NOT be run as an Administrator UNLESS it is an administration tool that requires Administrator access.

7/ A system to allow you to virtualize older windows installations under the newer system to allow running of older software (SFC obviously)

8/ Design in the ability to work with existing competing systems.  For example be able to install as dual boot with Linux and not mess with the existing set up.

9/ Separate the Operating System and Operating Environment (part of the modularizing mentioned above).  Allow command line programs to be run without the Windowing system.

I'd settle for a fair and reasonable price.  The last I heard Microsofts profit margin was ~85% (on Windows and Office) and that is only possible because of its monopoly position.

11) ability to allow someone with a valid license, a working internet connection, and a working cd-rw or better to burn a direct from MS server to cd copy of his windows program with license keys required. I know far to many with OEM Windows who have been screwed over due to the lack of an actual disk, or those who had their disk lost or ruined.
12) reduce the number of features that require the CD in order to be installed, such as east asian language support.

I'd like to see Windows become a hardware-centric base that allows you to run virtualized upper level operating systems, such as XP, Vista, Linux, etc.

-Allow for ultra high customization of the user interface (i.e. not limited to 3 colors for a theme but have the ability to use the entire color pallet, design exactly how you want Start menu, and Program Files to look (even with the ability to replace the word Start with what you want).
-On install of operating system, only the minimal number of tasks will run (Only the minimal 10/11 processes that are needed at least in XP) and not have anything else activate on startup
-Has full support of all other previous operating systems and programs including those programs under DirectX 6, 7 , etc.
-No programs included on the installation Windows CD, all apps such as Outlook and WMP are on a separate disk.
-Abiltiy to specify exact permissions of users as an Administrator, not just limit it to Limited and Administrator type accounts
..mmm... thats all I can think of this moment though I'm sure I have more

NO MORE WINDOWS ACTIVATION!!!!!

If they're gonna insist on activation, at the very least have it so that as long as your key is valid, you can install it as many times as you want without worry that Micros*it is gonna make you get a new key.

And when you build a new computer for yourself, you can use the same copy of Windows.  Just tell them that you built a new system, old one is no longer in service, and that's it.

I could care less what they do or don't integrate into the install, and the NTFS file system is fine for me.  Just as long as they improve compatibility for older software and games, and they don't make it harder for 3rd party apps to run stable on the system.

If they're gonna make the new Windows in both 32 and 64 bit versions, which more than likely they will, sell both with a single key.  If you want to switch to 64 or 32 bit, just install it and use the same key.

No more Home Edition, Professional, Media Center, Home Premium, etc...  Just one version that will do everything you need it to, regardless of what the person may use it for, be it business applications or home entertainment use, or gaming.

They do have one edition that will do everything.  Windows Vista Ultimate.  It has a suggested retail price of $319/$219.95, it also includes idiotic features like dreamscene as well as useful ones like bitlocker.  Despite this, it still sucks.  Microsoft makes multiple versions because they want to make more money by selling variations to different markets, but in the case of vista, its led to further confusion.  Personally, I would like to see greater device support, and stability.  The two biggest annoyances, I have with vista are its desire to reintroduce me to the BSOD. and the fact that I have a few devices that will not work with it.

I beta tested Vista Ultimate.  Only thing I really liked was the chess game.

I'm well aware of all the different versions of Windows, and why Microsoft does it all.  That's why I said to get rid of such practices and make one single, all purpose OS.

Not really.  Macs are still geared towards entertainment and multimedia work than it ever will be for business and office applications.

However, I would like to see a version of the MacOS publicly released for use on PCs.  Would be interesting.

On the other hand, if I owned a business, I wouldn't want an OS that gave my employees more ways to goof off such as a full fledged media center.  Then again, they could also make it simple for the employer to lobotomize those features.

Naturally.  But during the install process, when Windows Setup asks you what features you want installed, you can disable any and all games from being installed.

Also, since it is obvious that new versions of Windows are going to be built using the NT core, you can also grant limited access to all users except admins.  It'll prevent anyone from installing anything on the system that they shouldn't.

Trust me, even business oriented operating systems don't prevent people from goofing off.

Before my mother retired, she was constantly having to uninstall games and movie player programs from the systems over at the jail because deputies would constantly download and install any games and other entertainment applications from the internet, and since they always whined and moaned about needing administrator privledges to do their jobs, they had no problems installing the applications they downloaded from the net.

Now if the games and other apps they put onto the machines didn't cause the damn things to crash or were laced with viruses, I don't think it would have been as bad, but my mom was constantly annoyed at the fact that she was having to constantly remove the same stuff over and over again, telling them not to do it cause the systems aren't meant for games, and that some of the programs they keep installing are laced with viruses.

But, as long as they have admin privledges on their workstations, they'll always do it.

So, to make sure your employees don't goof off, make sure that the Windows games aren't installed during the install process, or have them uninstalled when you get the machines, if the OS is preinstalled, and then set the user privledges to make sure they can't install anything unless authorized.

I've got a picture of my bare butt on standby.  It has been known to cause whole networks to crash and people to go into comas.

Heck, Punisher had to get a new graphics card and monitor for his system.  And he also had to get a new set of eyes too if I remember correctly.  I had to flip the bill.
