I say HA to DRM.  I don't worry about it cause I know how to get my music without DRM and for free.  :-D

Also, when it comes to movies and the like, I don't have problems with it on my rig, and have no problems making backups.  Just gotta know what programs to use.  :-D

As for Linux, I really want to start learning to use Linux, but lately whenever I download an ISO and burn an install disc so that I can install it on another drive, I can't install Linux cause it keeps saying there's an error with the disc.

I know my DVD drive is working fine, and the disc is bootable, yet can't get the damn thing past the initial option screen.

What would be good to get Windows 7 or Vista as I am shopping for a new system?

I would wait for Windows 7, unless you need a new system now..

You can get Vista, and get the Windows 7 upgrade later, it won't make a difference.. I have a feeling it will cost very little to get Windows 7 upgrade for Vista users.. You might even find an RTM or Windows 7 upgrade just after the release of the full version.. but currently Vista is the latest full OS available...

Windows 7 won't go into Beta until 1st quarter 2009, with a release date of possibly 3rd quarter 2009 about September, 2009.

It appears that Windows 7 will NOT be out in 2009 unless you include Alpha and possibly Beta versions as "out".

However, a Microsoft spokesman told CNN that in fact the industry veteran was talking about alpha or beta versions, as it usually happens, and not the final product. In fact, an early version was already shipped in 2007 to selected testers and partners. The Windows 7 Milestone 1 (build 6.1.6519.1).

It seems that Gates didn't clarify what he meant.

Interestingly, none of that is an issue for me. You'd be surprised how much DRM does not matter when you are on dial-up, don't watch many movies and spend all your time coding.

I'm on dial up to.  Mostly I watch DVDs on the TV.  Occasionally I do watch one on the computer because it can handle some that are "jumpy" on the DVD players or to do screen captures or get the advantage of better resolution than my old TV has.  The 22" monitor is not that much smaller than the 27" TV and I sit closer.  A HD TV is still over a year away for me, assuming I find a new job that pays decently promptly.

DRM such as the afore mentioned blocking of my making a legal (in Canada) copy of a DVD I own annoys me as does the activation issue where Microsoft reserves the right to deactivate my system if I have it evolve too quickly.  Since I stayed with Win2000 Pro as my only Windows machine and made LinuxMint my primary OS I haven't had much issue with DRM since.

It seems that every time I try to learn some programming the world slaps me upside the head and tells me to pay attention to other things.  I'm due sometime soon to make another stab at it :)  .
