List your favorite games!
« on: March 22, 2008, 09:02:54 am »
I'm a big fan of mostly older games-- ones that might not have the flashiest graphics, but whose gameplay is incredible. I'm sure other SFCers would understand. Post your favorite games here! I'll start out:

(in no real order):
1. Starfleet Command 2: Orion Pirates (2001)-- been around for a while, and still has a loyal following
2. Doom (The Ultimate Doom - 1995)-- so fun and addicting
3. Star Wars: Tie Fighter (1995)-- a very good flight sim, fly for the emperor! Killer hard at times.
4. Might and Magic IV/V (1994-1995)-- the most fun in an RPG
5. Might and Magic VI (1998)-- a classic
6. Exile II: Crystal Souls (1996)-- not the best graphics or sound, but so darned fun.
7. Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (2002)

Mine would have to go:

Starfleet Command: Orion Pirates
Civilization IV: Beyond The Sword
X-Wing vs TIE Fighter
World of Warcraft (spend way too much time here, but meh...)
Command and Conquer: Tiberium Dawn
Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2

The gameplay on Tiberium Sun was a bit lacking especially for MP, Tiberium dawn's missions are just classic, and its good too, since multiplayer was added as an afterthought for that game, and it shows.  Red Alert was better for MP, but not by much, and the campaigns weren't as good as TDs.

I doubt there could be a game to rank up above Orion Pirates, even though I spend more time on WoW, if a OP server were to come up, I'd drop playing time there to almost nothing.

A bit different... and in no particular order

1. Quake 2... My first serious FPS... I just could never get into Doom...
2. Hearts of Iron 2... One of the most fun strat games out there...
3. Galactic Civilizations 2... Great 4x... heck the only 4x left!
4. MOO2... Grandaddy of 4x games
5. Phantasy Star 3/4... My favorite RPG's old school Sega Genesis
6. Tetris... yeah...
7. The wonderful stress relieving flash games from http://www.diseasedproductions.net/ Try Fuzzy McFluffenstein 1... Mouse mashing incredibly gory cartoon violence is where it's at!
8. City of X mmorpg... Easiest mmo to pick up and play but doesn't become stale and doesn't feel like a dressed up excel spreadsheet like all the fantasy mmo's I've dabbled in like WoW and EQ2... Plus you can make a good looking character even at level one instead of having to kill 5k rats to get the blue toilet plunger to unclog the queens toilet so she gives you .5 gold to upgrade from filthy rags to consignment store cast offs. Nor do you have to spend days in game right clicking to upgrade your sewing skill from 0 to 1...

Well, Hmm, it's a toss up between

#1. Diablo 2 or SFC (original) or heck, might as well say the entirety of both series...the SFC series or the Diablo series
#2  Which ever of the above isn't the #1 game of the week is the #2 game.
#3. X-Wing Alliance
#4. Empire Earth
#5. Baldurs Gate Series
#6. Freelancer
#7. Neverwinters Nights

going Console next

would probably have

Everquest: Champions of Norrath
Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance
X-men Legends 2
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Justice League Heroes

(As you can tell, definate Diablo type game theme on the consoles for my favorites)

4. Never Winter Nights. Halfling Thieves wearing Girdles of Giant Strength Rule  ;D

3. Tie Fighter. Remember do not give Lord Vader any Orders during Combat :o

2. Freelancer.  Smuggling "Druid Fluid" and "Tobacco" is a blast in more ways then you know :woot:

1. SFC Orion Pirates.  Kitty's Rule..... Yes they really do   ;D

Serious Sam SE  :2gun:

Unreal Tournament

Civilization (the original that ran on a 286)

and of course SFC... the glory days were SFC1 on mplayer flying Hydran before they fixed the hellbore arming rates. You just could not lose! It took people quite a while to figure that out. Back then any SFB knowledge was a huge advantage. Of the SFC series I think EAW is my favorite.

GLtron... it is a little limited, but a good source of amusement for 10-15 minutes at a time. Also partly because Strafer and I both enjoyed that game.

Dungeon Keeper 2 was fun.

1. SFC2 EAW and OP
2. Civ2
3. AoE2
4. Tie Fighter
5. Mechwarrior 2 series(I loved customizing my mech)
6. Panzer General series(except for Pacific General, which was maddening)
7. Sid Meier's Pirates

Just about everything listed already with the inclusion of Fallout, Fallout 2 and The Fall - Last Days of Gaia. If you don't recognize the last one, look it up. So much like Fallout that I forgot it wasn't while playing it.

The Fall - Last Days of Gaia.

Any ideas about where I could get my hands on a copy of that?

European stores. It was supposed to be released in the US but the company folded, so what you have to do I think is find a Polish/German version and then apply an English translation that's been created. The opening video and voiceovers are German but the text is English.

Here's a copy

I have other ways of finding it if that won't work for you, PM me.

Well, if we include console and arcade games I'ld have to say in no particular order

The original super mario brothers-still has replay value after over 20 years

NARC- A really violent video game with lots of drug and sex references, but generally approved of because it was released in 1989, and the object of the game is to kill drug dealers and cracklords.  I got the NES version for Christmas when I was 8, but didn't understand that names like "spike rush the hypoman," "Joe Rockhead," "Sgt. Skyhigh," and of course "Kinky Pinky" the knife wielding psycho clown that haunts the porn district were all drug references and sex references that I didn't pick up on until years later.

Mortal Kombat 1-3.  I liked the digitized actors, and was impressed by the number of gruesome ways the writers found to kill people.  I think that the games look less realistic since they went to cgi characters.

The Zelda series up until Majoras mask.-I stopped getting consoles after the N64 so I can't comment on what came later

Super Smash bros. was a really fun family game.

The SFC series

Fighting Steel-WWII Naval Surface warfare

Microsoft combat flight simulator- a fun flight sim made even more fun by modding

Shockwave's e-mail chess- a great way to have fun and correspond with your friends from school

Silkroad Online- Not the best MMORPG, but free

1. NWN2  (active player, waiting for MOW and gonna load Adam Miller new mod soon).
2. SFC series  (active player pvp)
3. NWN1 (inactive player.  Issues with newer Nvidia cards prevents play)
4. Oblivion  (just got active again after loading a whole mess of mods; taking a few new PC's through the game)
5.  Football Mogul  (active player; something to do when I'm bored to tears)
6. Morrowind  (havent played in awhile not loaded on any of my systems)

I also have played Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, pretty much an interactive novel with no replay value.  But I enjoyed it quite a bit.  Looking for more games like that.  I wish tey would make some more Gabriel Knight games.

I also bought Silent Hunter but never played it when I found out it was DVD.  I returned the game and since bought a computer wiht a DVD drive but never bought it again.

I'll read the thread onit.  Maybe I'll buy it again.  I love those Sub sims.

Thats about it right now.

This is not my "all time" list of games but games in the last ten years on my list.

I could have added things like Utlima series, Wizardry, Front page Sports Football, Zork, CIV III,  Age of EMpires, 4d Boxing, etc and a number of games whose titles I have forgotten in the dim mists of Golden Age of single player games that I see as starting in the late 80's until the end of the 90's.  Many of those games were so original and addictive it hurts.

Oddly, I think they have lots of replay value if you wait a year or so, kinda like re-reading a book you really enjoyed or watching 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' again.

Wish they made more Gabe games, too.  While I don't think the two sequels were as bad-ass as the original, they were still quite good.
