dual booting
« on: March 02, 2008, 09:14:11 am »
well here my question finally :)

i got a pentium 3 and if its possible to chose what os to boot with, right now i got win 98 because of 2 old games that one not working under win xp and the dosbox will not make it work because its a OLD game, it can work on a

but was build in 96 or 95, its a old dos game call transport tycoon from microprose.

anyway what i want is to be able to have win 98 and win xp on it, win xp work fine but the com will need more ram cause 128 is a bit slow :), and i can read mp3 audi cd and view mpegs on it.

so is it possible to have both os and chose witch one to boot with?

OK this is what you do...

Format your HDD with Win 98 SE using FDisk.. if possible make sure that you format using FAT32. If not, then you can check if FAT 32 down below.

Install Win 98 SE as per normal. install it completely including restarts.

restart system and go to Start Menu - programs - accessories - system tools - drive converter and make sure drive is in FAT32, if not convert drive to FAT32 or you will not be able to install XP.

Next put in your XP CD, use XP's partition manager and create a new partition (roughly 50 to 60 % of total HDD space) and let XP format it for NTFS (if available, if not you can do that later)...

XP has a built in Boot Manager..

Install XP to the new partition.. Do not use the Upgrade option.. restart machine to finalize install..

reboot to XP and go into Start Menu - programs - accessories - system tools - drive converter and use the application to make sure XP is running in NTFS mode, if not, use the tool to convert... Convert ONLY the Win XP partition.. the Win 98 Partition HAS to stay FAT32..

restart machine, you should have a screen showing both 98 and XP to choose from.

go into Win 98 and then download the updates if you can find them.. there should be a couple of sites that has all the updates in 1 zip file...

then load XP and do the same thing... you will have to do a bit of restarting to accomplish this, but it is worth it to get rid of many bugs..

Also update Direct X for XP to current version (9.0c).. and update win 98 Direct X to version 8.1 only to ensure proper compatibility for your older games.

that is all there is to is..

there are ways to install to the same partition, but the problem with that is running XP under a FAT 32 partition as win 98 will not run in a NTFS partition.. FAT 32 fragments quickly and has a habit of corrupting.. keeping the OS's on different partitions will help if an OS corrupts.. you can always transfer data from one partition to the other then reload the OS.. XP should run on NTFS so it will work faster and won't fragment as much..

Also it is recommended to have at least 512 Mb ram on your system, or even 1 Gb... XP will run OK on 512 but runs great at 1 GB.. Win 98 only recognizes a max of 512 Mb ram... I would pop in 1 Gb Ram for XP and let Win 98 just use what it can.. system should be very stable after this.

Hope that this helps.

I actually ran Windows 98 for a time with a system loaded with 1.5 gigs, and never had any problems other than what I was used to with Windows at the time.  I was also running Windows ME on another drive.  That had some memory issues, but then again ME was buggy to begin with.

Hell, the one time I installed Win95 on that machine just for kicks it ran alright, that is of course after I managed to do a successful boot into Safe Mode and install that processor patch from Microsoft for Win95.

I've thought about installing Win95 again on a small hard drive on this dual core machine, just for fun.

Might do that.

on Win 95 and Win 98 and Win ME.. you can install all the memory you want.. the OS will only use 512 MB of it.. it is a limitation of the software, not the system.

XP 32 bit only recognizes 2 GB.. XP 64 bit only recognizes 6 Gb

I've seen systems with XP 32 bit with 4 gigs of ram, and XP always recognized the 4 gigs without problems.  As for the old Win95/98/SE/ME versions, the last time I used any of them, they recognized the 1.5 gigs I had installed at the time.

Your system monitor will see the Ram.. but the OS will not use all the Ram... XP won't use more than 2 Gb ram for the 32 bit version.. even if the system says it has 4 Gb installed.. it is a limitation of XP OS.. research online.. even Microsoft stated this limitation.

Just like Win 95, 98, 98se, and ME.. Microsoft stated the system will see 2 Gb installed.. but the OS can only use 512 MB of it.. the OS can not use more than 512 MB of memory for an application.. the Vid card if configured correctly may share the remaining memory, but the Programs running under Windows will be limited to 512 Mb for Win 95, 98, 98SE, and ME.. and 2 Gb for 32 bit Win XP.. and 6 Gb for Win XP 64 bit.

Vista 32 bit Home and Business will use 3 GB, even though is shows support for 4 Gb.. Vista 64 bit will recognise and use 8 Gb for the Home and Business versions.. the Vista Ultimate edition will recognize 128 Gb for both the 32 and 64 bit versions.. and in some cases it may recognize more than that..

but these are limitations that the OS themselves have.. the OS will not let applications use more memory that what I have stated.. check Microsoft for more details.. but it is just the way the OS is coded..

just like Win 3.1 won't recognize or use more than 256 Mb...

Each new OS lets the system utilize more memory... the older OS systems are handicapped for memory.. which is why it is important to upgrade your system and OS so you can run and use newer applications that require more memory.

I've seen the same info on the net, but I've also spoken with techs that I know and my mom knows and they all pretty much told me to ignore what those articles say.

That's why I mentioned that Win95 recognized 1.5 gigs in the last system I installed it on for fun.
