Base Bashes - Released
« on: May 02, 2006, 06:17:46 pm »
Trying to turn a bad day into a good one. I'm home sick for a few days. Painful condition that has drained me physically as well - but better life through pharmacology has prevailed and I've bashed a few bases - need a home for all the ships Raven, MP, and Markyd have been pumping out. Keep 'em comin' fellas!

Just meshes for now. I'll be taking suggestions and need to get permissios before I release.

That'd be an AWESOME pirate base! Only thing I can think of is sculpt the skull like the front was done out of an asteroid, er just put a rock on the back of it... Make it more realistic. But its still cool.

Sorry to hear you've been sick. :(  Glad to hear your feeling better. :)

Guess that this proves the paraphrase of an old saying:

" I will stop modelling when they pry my cold dead fingers off my mouse." ;D

Models look great, I agree with dizzy that making the skull part of an asteroid would be good, seems that an asteroid field would be the ideal place for a privateer base.

Agreed, it would look sweet carved into an asteroid

Thanks guys. Picture is bad or you could see the asteroid texture applied to the skull. here's a better shot:

I've also been tinkering with a support beam between the habitat rings and the skull but haven't found a way i like yet.

Biggest issue is the polygon count - ~8K due to the skull. Anybody know a way in 3ds max V3 to quickly reduce polycounts?

If I can get her reduced down enough, I'll try and release her in a few days. Markyd has been tempting me with the Arrow so this will be some payback!

The final version will have a little surprise...

You can use MultiRes or Optimize modifiers to reduce the poly count. If you dont know how to do this.. go to the tutorials... search for either of the two and you will get a step by step way to do it.  ;)

 ;D

It's always nice to see some support stuff rather than the latest {insert race here} supercruiser.

This is my favorite station at the moment:

Sorry for the lack of updates. I do not know how to use max very well and it took me awhile to find the time to sit down and learn how to reduce poly counts. Here's a version of the Skull Station at 2800 polies. Notice that the skull has been attached to the rings - I decided to embed it into them verses using struts. What do you think?

well, given it's now using an asteroid texture, one could assume the skull was actualy carved out of a space rock and sits in the center of the base as so, simply to make an impression to visitors. Though apparently all the pirates at said base are vampires. ;D

Sorry for the lack of updates. I ran into a few complications and put my bases on hold for a while. I get some down time in a week or so, I'll see if I can get motivated and release at least one of them -- the Warparrow needs a home!

Whitestar, what is that in your sig?  They look like Colonial Vipers destroying the old style (the 70s version) Cylon Raiders.

I am not a big fan of the new BSG, now I haven't watched it much after season 1.  Was just wondering where that came from.

LOL Maybe for Blood Legion, but mostly for the pirate factions. And as far as the clips in my sig, yes vipers killing cylons. I went online and found clips and used them in my sig.

I've made you guys wait long enough for these babies and I apologize - I should have taken care of this long ago. So here you go with a couple of caveats.

1. They are bashes - I just used my imagination and built them like legos - the real talent comes from the original modelers.

2. I am releasing them in 3ds format only – I did not convert to mod, HP/DP, illuminate, or create VL, BS, gf, etc files. You'll have to do that if you want them in game - I figured it was best to get them out since I'd made you all wait so long and my efforts are on my "Shadows" mod right now.

3. Please just give credit where credit is due if you use them in a mod or another game. Drop me a line as well. It always makes me feel good to know you like my "lego" and to see how it might have sparked your imagination. I recently saw my Luna and Fury were ported to BC and as luck would have it I just got a copy so I'll have to try them out.

4.  ;) I'm secretly trying to motivate Raven and AsYlUm into releasing some of their WIPs so I can bash even more!  ::)

MP helped me out on the Warp Arrow above when I bafooned it  -- Thanks MP! I've enjoyed toying with the Warp Arrow in skirmishes.

Note: from the multitude of posts I've made today you can tell I have some extratime. I am currently confined to my house for a few days due to my lower back issues (again!) - pain pills and my laptop are my company until my family gets home. So the last caveat - typos are the pharmacists fault not mine ;)

SPECIAL THANKS TO THE MAKERS OF MY "Legos" :
Vince T and his Blue Phantom Project - especially General Trageton who modeled parts of the Merchant Station
Red Dragon for his awesome DS9 model - parts used in each base
Coxxon for his Cloud 9 dome and texture used in the merchant biodome
The unknown author of the vampire skull used as the asteroid center of the Privateer station - I downloaded it years ago and there was no readme in the zip file.
Björn Jónsson - A very accomplished planetary map maker and renderer. He has some terrific maps of Jupiter's moons.
