To the Group:
Recently, I upgraded the video card on a computer that runs Windows 98SE. I had used an old TNT 32 Meg Nvidia Video Card, and updated to an E-GeForce 6200 Video Card. Everything works great, except.......
When I try to shut down the computer, it hangs, saying "write fault error writing device AUX abort retry fail ignore."
I have to hit abort, then hit any key to continue, then it restarts the computer, and I select safe mode, and then I can shutdown.
I have the most updated driver for the video card. Using a much older driver version, the problem does not exist, but the performance is choppy. I've contacted both E-Geforce and Nvidia about the problem, but no real help.
The driver seems to cause Windows to want to write to a device that does not exist. It seems to be the serial port or parallel port (when I tried a few things in the Bios, it seemed to affect the problem, but not solve it).
I'm wondering if anyone has ever experienced anything like this before, and if you have any thoughts.
Alternatively, is it possible to create an easy to use shutdown program that just restarts the computer in safe mode and then shuts the computer down (this is how I currently shut it down, but it would be nice to not have to wait for it to restart, go to safe mode, then shut down). Thanks.
