The Karma System
« on: February 15, 2008, 03:52:01 am »
Right, so I just want to get a feel for the community's feelings about the karma system.  Personally, it is a huge headache for me, since most of my admin time is spent dealing with karma issues.

If that's the case I'd say dump it (in a heartbeat!) - your time is too valuable to let it get sucked up on something like this!

Is this the 4th or 5th time the karma issue has come up here on D.net?  I stopped counting after 3.

Just as then as now, it's useless and should have been deleted from the whole server years ago.

I know I've used it to give Karma and take it away.  Thing is, alot of people, especially in H&S, who tend to claim karma isn't that big of a deal, also say it should be kept around, and also complain when they get neg karma and then comment that the people who neg others karma aren't man enough to just come out and say what's on their minds, yet they're guilty of the exact same thing.

If the karma system is gonna be kept around, disable the neg karma feature.  If someone doesn't like what you post, they can't neg you.  If they really like it, they'll give you +1.

But, since we've been down this road before, I don't have many hopes these days of anything really changing.  The last time all that was done was that instead of showing both positive and negative karma, only the sum of both is shown.

But, again, just do away with the system.  Like you said, it takes up too much of your time.  Maybe if the karma system were eliminated, more time could be spent putting down flame wars in certain threads before they start, and actually warn those people who like to start them to stop and start acting civilized or get banned.

Or, in my case, stop hijacking threads with senseless, yet sometimes extremely funny, comical posts.  (You gotta admit though, I've become quite proficient in that capacity  ;D )

I tried desperately to get rid of the karma system. Best I could get other admin staff to agree to was the net value instead of +/-.

Definitely count my vote for removal.

However, be aware that the same problem members will find other ways to consume your time with childish disputes, whether it involves karma or not. Removing karma would slow it down for a little while until they found somet6hing else to fight about.

Want to solve the problem permanently? Get rid of Hot and Spicy. (that would make a nice db prune too)

Here's another suggestion that might work: only positive karma. No negative.

Well our database has grown rather large, it would be good to make room for the more important Dynaverse and Modeling forums.

Though My favorite idea is only positive karma which would solve the issue and we could leave everything else as is.

Another idea would be, since nothing posted in H&S has any lasting impact on the game, once it drops off page 2, it's gone.  Only allocate a finite amount of space to H&S and let it work like circular logging.

Why would we save a discussion about OJ Simpson indefinitely? It's nice to be able to have the discussions, but 99.9% of them have a usable  shelf life of less than a week.

How about page 4?  Sometimes I still dig through the various pages, but rarely do I dig past page 5.

I'm of the same mind as most everyone else, if karma's a problem dump it. I give bumps when I read something that makes me laugh or is well thought out or thoughtful and when a modeler posts a model WIP that wows me. I won't give negative karma, if I don't like something written I'll ether say so or just ignore it. Dropping karma wouldn't be a big loss.

I agree, a monthly pruning would be a good thing. Heck the only person I know of that can remember what Sethan posted back on July 2nd 3003 would be mush. That guy has to good a memory.

One reason why H & S won't be going away:

1.) BEWBIES.

'Nuff said.

Now, on the pruning - if we could do it in such a way as to not affect BEWBIES, that'd be swell.

I'll look into it with our Admins.

Bewbies is always on the first page of H&S.  So maybe anything past page 4 or 5 of H&S is deleted from the datebase, that way the Bewbies thread is left untouched.  Or does the db not work that way?
