Need 3D SFC map of the Galaxy
« on: January 31, 2008, 05:31:22 pm »
OK, I have an idea for the 2D galaxy for the SFC MOD for the B5SC game.  I'll use the General War map created by me back in the SFC2 days.  Now how to extend it to 3D???  I think on the web there were 3D maps, but I need one SPECIFICALLY for SFC/SFB.  Warping (jumping) out of system in the free campaign works now...

I'm having the same problem in the Babylon 5 Universe as well.  A couple good 2D maps exist, but no 3D...

The Galaxy isn't that thick, 3D wise, which was how the SS Valiant was able to reach the edge so quickly depite being a Warp 2 - 3 starship in "Where No Man Has Gone Before" as it would only need to travel up or down against the disc plain, for a short distance, from the Sol System to reach the edge of the Galaxy. Some folks still think that the edge referes to the rim of the Galaxy, and the ask the "How come..... " question about the SS Valiant.

There are 3D maps of the Galaxy by astromical websites out there somewhere and all the races of Star Trek are supposedly based on actual stars. Vulcan is supposed to orbit Altair.

Using the map in the "Star Trek Technical Manual" by Franz Joseph and a 3D map from an astromoney website, it should be possible to modify it into a 3D campaign map.

If I understand right, Cardassia and the small Cardassian Empire is under the Klingon / Kzinti border space on the coreward side. Quite a few TNG empires and territories are overrlapping TOS and SFB races if viewed on a conventional 2D map.

The Klingons have many ways to fry a cat. I prefer to use an L7 Fast Battlecruiser!!

The Star Trek Starcharts, that I use for my own-made "Fantasy Trek" game, has Vulcan at 40 Eridanii A, and Cardassia pretty well 'west' of Klingon Space.... of course it doesn't how Kzinti space.... I don't think....

I thought that 51 Eridani was where Andor is found??

At least the Rigellians are easy to pinpoint.... ;D

The Cardassian Empire isn't very big as (A) their ships are crap and (B) they only invade races who can't defend themselves very well (Bajor)!!

Garrack (to Basir): " ...... and the story in the book ends with the Cardassian Empire defeating the Klingon Empire."

Worf:  "So the book is a complete fantasy then??"

The quote is great  ;D And again, the Star Charts cites Andor as the seventh planet in orbit about the star Procyon (Alpha Canis Minoris).... but I know some people don't go by the starcharts... I do, because it is a pretty exhaustive resource that I use quite a bit...

I was going on the Franz Joseph ST Technical Manual and the Space Flight Chronology, as the latter gives the Vulcan homeworld orbiting Altair. Now as Rich Sternbech is one of Paramount's "Star Trek gods", this does kind of give Altair more weight.

In canon, Vulcan's home star isn't actually named.

For the LAN campaigns I programmed the computer to throw up a map of random star systems on a 2D plain..... well I ws working with an 8 bit computer back then (for SFB) and now run the exact same programme on a PC emulator.

The planets are just numbered and have no names.

I seriously do need to write a more modern version and maybe in 3D, though thinking out tactcal moves and attack plans in 3D, let alone the shape of a front line, isn't something the human brain is used to. We are ground dwellers after all and think in 2D map wise.

Where is the Pakled homeworld??

It's a shame that the "hard of understanding" Pakled didn't appear in DS9 or TNG more often. I've both met and had bosses who could qualify as a Pakled!! ;D

I'm surprised that the Ferengi hadn't exploited the Pakeld yet for profit. I mean selling them Kellog's Al Bran in bulk to make them go!! ::)

The Klingons have many ways to fry a cat. I prefer to use an L7 Fast Battlecruiser!!

I'm taking the Dynaverse "Fed and Empire Map" and adding 3D-ness to it for starters.  3D Flight and Tactics, well, um, are going to be different.   3D battles are a must as many of the great battels in TNG, DS9 and B5 were 3D and used 3D tactics.
