Modest request: Standard High Poly High Res Model pack for OP
« on: January 22, 2008, 01:23:38 am »
I recently powered up OP for the first time in awhile and was frightened (yikes!) by the old standard D5 model.  I am sure it was a great model for its time but in general I would hope that by this point the modelers out there have come up with a set of high quality models that could replace any existing ship model in the game.  My question and/or request would be for a compilation of a high poly/high res model pack that would effectively replace every model or nearly every model in the game.  The only such model pack that I know of was and is the D2 high res model pack created some years ago that I think were all Rick Knox's models (P81).  So I am wondering if anyone has tried to compile a new set of high quality models for OP or would be willing to take on such a project that would effectively become a new standard set of models for OP.

And before the models version of OP+ is recommended, I have to say that the models included in OP+ seem pretty inconsistent to me.  What I think what we would all like is a simple one-stop solution to replace the old Taldren models rather than sorting through the hundreds of existing models to find the "best ones".  Maybe someone will be willing to take that on or can point me to an existing one.

System Specs:

Dell Dimension E521
AMD64x2 5000+
2G DDR2 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3
250GB SATA HD

THe orginal D2 pack was done by a few old timers now, P81, Cleeve, Atra, and a host of others. If you are only Interested in updating the basic looks there are plenty of retextured versions out there. Where the OP+ mod went for maximum different ships so you knew what they had from a distance I would choose fewwer models and vary the textures to make the ship more approp for the role it was to fill.

If you want High end but not to high impact on your system look at WZs' current works. I think you will find most of what you need from him or any particular ship you need ask in this forum.

What you are asking for I don't think will happen mainly because the team it took to create the D2 mod some 9 months to do was quite large. Frankly there are not that many of us around here anymore, most have moved onto other games but exporting to SFCOP was always easy to do so we have been lucky that they have allowed us to convert them or they did it for us.

I think the best thing to do is work out what models are out there that you like, the fewer the better, and see if you can get the ones not close enough in looks that you want redone.
People always said they wanted the government to listen to them and now the government is listening, taking notes and names...and coming to see you soon!

Remember the axiom of big government bureaucrats: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. When, finally, under the crushing weight of taxes and regulation, it stops moving, subsidize it.

Now see I don't sgree with that. I like variety. My game has basically a different ship for each designation. It gets real old real fast seeing the same model representing 15 refits/upgrades. But that my personal preference. I can say I would like to see more modern meshes of some of the great D2 designs as the modelling/texturing has improved so much since that pack was done.
