SFC3 - Damage Texture - Is there a standard damage texture?
« on: December 24, 2007, 11:42:22 pm »
Hi Everyone,

I had a quick question, I notice that some models I've downloaded have no damage textures, now instead of me manually copying my standard damage texture bitmaps in each model where I'd have to do one for each texture file ie; Galaxy1D.bmp and Galaxy1_iD.BMP is there an easier way?

I thought I read somewhere that someone was saying that you could place a DAMAGE.bmp and DAMAGEi.bmp in the model directory and that would essentially do the same thing. I've tried that, I've deleted the *.X files added the the DAMAGE.BMP and DAMAGEi.BMP to the model directory, recached the models but that didn't seem to work. Is there something I'm missing? are those filenames incorrect? or is the easy way even possible in SFC3?

Thanks for reading everyone, any help is appreciated.

My honest opinion?  If you're looking for a quick and dirty way to try generating some damage textures, or are looking to build some generic damage textures, you're going to be doing a lot of copying and renaming of stock textures that you create.

Case in point:  p81's ships generally use something like fca1.bmp, so removing the registry and generating a generic damage texture on an upper saucer texture would be possible.  But as your ship starts taking damage, the upper saucer will start looking less like the original ship.

Best bet is generate damage textures for each ship.. but you can use something like damage or damagei as a layer in your new texture and then run some transparency filters to give you varying patterns in your damage.

Or do up a quick and dirty textures running through some filters in your graphics program..
..ooOOoo..totally useless information..ooOOoo..

Hello and thanks for your reply. I see what you are saying but that's just what I'm hoping to avoid, going through each ship and making custom damage textures is so time consuming. I've taken 2 generic damage textures which actually look very cool when they are used but yeah copying and renaming the file xx amount of times per model is also very time consuming. I was hoping that there was another way.....an easier way :) I've attached the two damage textures to this reply to give everyone a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Just a followup on my last reply those attached damage textures I use the BMP versions for damage texture. I attached jpg's here due to size limitations for posting

The easy way is what you're doing now -- copy and rename the same texture map for all damage textures.

The hard way, but it also makes the graphics effects more variable and realistic, is to make every single damage texture based on its original textures. It is so time consuming that I don't want to bother with anything SFC3 right now. :P

Yeah, I really made all damage textures in my mod one by one myself... :banghead:

Thanks for your response, I'm sorry for my late reply. Yeah since you put it that way I guess your right. Appreciate the reply thanks again

Take care
