Plasma tv deal
« on: November 09, 2007, 05:31:08 pm »
Hey,

Wanted to get some opinions on TV's.

LCD or plasma?

Walmart had a one day deal (that I expect to be repeated), Sanyo DP50747 50" plasma, $998.

I am not a huge technojunkie, I would like to upgrade my old 36"CRT to a big flatscreen, and dont have much use for a bunch of options.  I have just normal vision so I can recognize a *crappy* picture, but I am not up there counting pixels or anything.

Is that a good deal?

What is?

LCD, Plasma TVs aren't worth it imho.  I could be out of date on my knowledge, but i seem to remember they still have problem with image burn ins and lifespan (somethin like 5 years).

Personally i would suggest something with DLP (they actually are working on a laser version of DLP instead of white light, providing as much better color gammet for less power and bulk, it supposed to be out this year i think)

I would vote for LCD as well. They are much longer lasting and durable. Plus they don't have glare which is a big problem with plasma. Plasma's only big thing is color and black rendition which is somewhat better than LCD.

I like Plasma for sports. LCD can be blurry

I went to walmart tonight and looked at the tv.  Most of walmarts tv's (here anyway) are lcd, so I think that I see the glare issue.

Is what you mean by glare is that plasma has a big smooth sheet of glass over it, but lcd's dont?  In walmart, you could see the ceiling lights all reflected by the plasma, but the lcd's didnt unless you viewed them at an extemely obtuse angle.

If you have a nice dark room with no light sources shining AT the TV plasma is great and the better choice but any light source that is directed at the TV will reflect off a plasma but not an lcd as you saw a Wal Mart

Next question regarding glare is:  What is your opinion about level of glare comparing a plasma with a big old tube TV?  Is glare comparable, or less because of screen shape, materials, etc?
Thanks

Glare is worse due to the flat screen imo. Our old 'bigscreen' conventional TV pushes light sources out of the center with its curve which plasma doesn't do.

thanks.  I will take this all under advisement.  next step is to ask around to people who bought plasmas to see what they think.  could be that i am in line to wait another year.
thanks again.

Plasma pictures are the best. Best color reproduction, best contrast radio, best glare reduction, best everything.

That's why they're so damn expensive.

The biggest issue you should be looking at is resolution.  Does the 50" give you 1080i, 1080p, or is it even 1080 capable?  If it's not 1080, forget the thing.
