My most recent project....
« on: December 26, 2007, 03:01:39 am »
Well, someone asked if I was working on anything else recently, and I am, but still working on fixing a few problems.

I've already been given the green light for release, so I thought I'd make some renders for you guys.

Here's my own pre-refit Mars Class kitbash.

Original mesh and textures by WickedZombie45.  Retextures beautifully done by GAFY.  Kitbash and renders by me.

The phaser banks are GAFY's idea, to help further express the feel that this is the first ship of her kind.  I have alternate phaser textures, which I'll show once the mapping errors are fixed.

MP is still helping me with that problem.

Lots of little mapping issues are what was wrong I had a pretty big list for that one, which is why that ship was on hold.

That include the neck area as well?
Also the Photon tubes shouls all be of the silvered launcher the all black ones will have to be replaced as well
Also the windows by the upper warp pylons (Saucer) needs to be removed by a remap

The fastest way to fix the Photon tubes is to delete the all black ones and copy the silver ones and use that to replace them mesh wise. The all black ones would have to be remapped complete otherwise as they double up on a few areas as the backing. The area on the neck was where he added the additional polies just above the launcher they show black in the first picture. There is room for those polies on the neck texture but they needed mapping. You can see the windows that need to mapped off in the third picture they should not be near the engine pylons. Was just going to sqweeze the polies mapping closer orginally without having to reassign it, if I ever got Milkshape running again. Lastly The pylfront.bmp needs the pylfronti.bmp map added to the mesh. Then it looks like you got everything I rememeber.

if I ever got Milkshape running again.

You mean you can actually open a WZ model in milkshape? I've tried and, unless the model is < 5500 polys, milkshape blows up every time. I get this with some of Atra's more detailed models as well.

Sorry for the thread-jack. WZ has plenty of work I'd love to bash up for personal use, or even release, with his permission. Good work, folks. :)

Milkshape tops out about just under 12,000 polies for being able to handle it. So you might be hitting a bad area of RAM on your PC or you need to update the DLLs of Milkshape.

My problem is milkshape will not load at all and it is a DLL issue thta I fixed before but don't really want to go through that again.

Well, here's an update, but without renders.

The bottom torpedo pod was just too much trouble, so I deleted the damn thing.  But, MP showed me a nice concept that I had dismissed myself early on in the process.  Turns out it works nicely, and also helps sets the ship apart from other Mars models out there.  Thanks for showing me the concept could work MP.  :-D

The lower aft torpedo launchers are fixed.  Swapped the tubes themselves with ones that already had the desired mapping.  Thanks for the suggestion GAFY.

The mapping on the rim is not done, nor do I think it'll get done.  Don't know how to fix it.

The neck is fixed.  MP helped as much as he could, but MS3D kept wanting to resize and rotate the model the way it wanted, and I couldn't handle it.  However, Lint showed me how to solve the problem in MAX, so the neck is fixed.

I've gone through each texture entry and made sure that those textures that are supposed to have lightmaps have them, and those that don't, do not have any.

I'm wondering if I should even bother with spec maps in the renders.  I've already counted.  58 textures to make spec maps for.  That's alot of spec maps, and alot of attaching of spec maps.  I know in the end the results would be nice, but I'm debating if I should use spec maps in renders.

I am however gonna make a few renders right now.  They'll be in my next post.

2 things:

1) since the pix are so big you should try a photo album like blaxxer has so they load faster. Dynaverse loads them really slow.

2) You ought to try one of the deflector patterns off denis bailey's concord or carolina. That'd jazz it up bit.

Nice touch with the 4 tubes in the front btw.

If you have some pic on those deflectors please show them, but the more complex defeletor are late TMP alittle to more TNG. The TMP era ones are actually quite simple looking.

I was under the impression that this was late tmp, hence the extra phaser designs and the advanced engines.

1.) Hate photo albums, so Xenocorp shall do nicely.

2.) This is TMP, not TNG.  I like to keep things simple and within reason.  Very rarely do I jazz things up.

3.) Thanks for the 4 tubes.  I had originally thought of doing something similar to my Resurrection kitbash, but using 3 tubes, but decided against it.  MP was playing around with a few things on the mesh, and showed me that for a ship this size, 4 tubes facing forward works nicely.  It allows the ship to maintain the same number of torpedo launchers now that I've deleted that second torpedo pod that I had on the ventral of the ship.

I was under the impression that this was late tmp, hence the extra phaser designs and the advanced engines.

Nothing advanced about those engines.  Granted, because of the intercooler grille texture being the same as those from the Indomitable, you can be mistaken, but look at the design of the engines.  They're upscaled versions of the Refit Connie engines, beefed up too.

The phasers were a unique design that GAFY came up with on his own that I really loved.  To help set this ship apart from other Mars classes out there, and to further enhance the feel that this was the first of her kind, a prototype if you will.

I built this bash the way I did because, as much as I love WZ's Mars Refit, I wanted something more traditional, that was reminiscent of earlier times in Trek.  Using many of the same components as the Refit Connie during early TMP, I felt that this bash accomplished just that.

I wanted new clothes for this lady, and GAFY provided them nicely.  These textures were the basis for those Connie retextures he did.

I might include an alternate set of textures with more traditional phasers and engine glows.  Haven't decided yet.

Should be noted that this ship, unlike the Connie retextures, is meant to be in the standard Trek timeline.  However, if I include the alternate textures, this ship could fit into both timelines easily.

I'll think about it.

Actually the Indomitable uses these Engines textures as they were designed for this ship, I liked them enough to reuse them on that ship. So a smaller more powerful version that is on the Indomitable is probably more true. As stated this ship is the one that the Connie retextures were based off of, basically some of the builds i did for this one that I rejected went to the connies which just got released sooner as this one was still under build so to speak. This one also has the textures I did not use on the Connies included so that means he can mix and match this ship quite a bit more to fit a few time lines. I have no idea if he plans to use any of them or will include them, which might also include blanks, his ship his choice. Either way this one also is a first as this one will probably be released before I finish my custom version of it, which usually Cent gets to see but releases the non-custom version.

I intend for her to come in around the same time as the Enterprise's refit in 2271, or shortly thereafter.  I haven't written up the storyline for her yet, but I don't intend for her to be introduced any later than 2280.

I think you're spot on, and agree somewhere between 2270 - 2275 as that coincides with the TMP refits. I believe originally the ship enters service somewhere around 2260 about the same time as the Federation DN.

Actually in Trek the ship would never be built, and if Gene had not died DS9 would not have happened.

Gene was against the war and the things in it, so no Battleship would have ever been in Trek. This ship would however fit in SFB with no problems and the timelines that game uses. Putting this all aside then yes aroundthe TMP refits works out just fine.

hey gafy?, not to hijack the thread here, but how hard would it be to convert the X-era (the spruced up taldren ones) from the bar of 4 phasers to the 3 phaser pod like this ship? I assume I'd hafta cut off all the phaser mounts and then..paste a texture on the saucer textures? I honestly am not liking the idea of having 4 beams comming out of each pod I think it's a tad silly. That is if you 2 don't mind letting me put your new phaserpod on other ships...

That would be pretty much what you would have to do then shange the specs in the shiplist files. Unfortuantly though you will have to get premissions from Centurus as the textures were for his ship so they are under his control for useage

This is why when it comes to TMP type phasers, I just like to have them textured on.  Phaser arrays on the other hand I like meshed.  Good thing for me I know how to do that now.

Now I just need to learn to make ships instead of kitbashing them.  I'm still working on it.  MUAHAHAAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I just need to learn to make ships instead of kitbashing them.  I'm still working on it.  MUAHAHAAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

did you use that phaser tut by capt hooker? The only question I have is if I've already made a saucer or I am adding a phaserbank to a tmp vessel like you sometimes do, how do I get my arc to match the saucer? Cuz if you don't it will look funny.

I use FOAS's saucer tutorial, cause in it he teaches how to extrude the phaser arrays.  That way the shape and angle of the phasers always match the shape of the saucer, no matter what shape the saucer is in.

As for TMP phasers, again, I like them textured on.

GAFY.

Just wanted to let you know that I got that lightmap and attached it.  What do you think of the effect?

P.S.

For you Starforce, the render features one of the alternate warp textures.

gone back to a more traditional setup I see. it looks good.

The sacuer tut I based mine on was from deemon, where as you start with a slice profile out of a spline. (so, you think of what the saucer would look like cut down the middle and then make the left or right hand side from the centerpoint, ofcourse it needs to be round) With this you can make say a bell starbase for the feds (sfhq) or a ufo, ect. The I made the spline, did the lathe and forgot what other thing I pressed, weld core or something...to get rid of the extra crap. Since i lost deemons tut I forgot how to do it right and it took a couple hrs of tinkering to figure what I messed up on, but I got something close to the volantis from JOAT which is what I want to build. (my thread is on BCC if you were curious)

I like the look better than the glowing grill definatily, the copper blends nicily with the red.

The Alternate wapside texture you used should also use the Alt_wrplit.bmp to get the silver matched on the back side of warp scoop area. When I read the post with out looking at the Picture I thought you did the renders using the wrpout_Alt4, wrpin_Alt4, and wrplit_alt4 in place of the orginals, as I know you liked the look of the warp engines using that build version. Either way i still like the orginal side texture over the silver lining one.

Ahhh, my mistake.  I had been thinking about that warp side texture for the longest time, and wondered how it would look if used, so I threw it in there along with the more traditional warp intercooler grille texture.  And the warp bus texture, yep, it does look nice, doesn't it.  And the red comes out just beautifully.

I remember Cpt. Hooker had made a tutorial like that as well over at BCU some time back.  I had studied that tutorial numerous times.  Not bad.  I like it cause it explains a different way of doing it, and you never know when that can come in handy.

But when it comes to making saucer phaser arrays, I like the extrude method the best, since no matter if you're using a Sovereign type saucer, Galaxy type saucer, or a round saucer like the Connie's saucer, the phaser array will always follow the shape of the saucer precisely.

Happens not like I send out instrustions on how to use the altnerate stuff I sent with it. I try to label them so you know what goes with what but don't always do a good job with that, after all the Alternates is usually the rejects folder renamed. Just because I did not care forthe look of some things doesn't mean the everyone will share the same opinion, which is why I try to give you options to play with. I liked the Triangle arrangement of the phasers over linear versions, but you also have those options to explore just incase. Who knows you might find a bash you want to do where those might look good (will not hold my breath for it though).

In the end it is all about opinion and the options availble that you get to make them with, and everyone will have their own favorite, just as Fallen_Warrior liked the Purple/Blue Chabot.

Either way you should be getting close to the final build soon and putting a registry on it.

Ran into a few problems concerning the warp engines and the registries for them.  I made the problem, but didn't discover it until now.

When I was prepping the engines at the beginning, what I should have done was modify them as a pair, not as a single engine and clone it a few times and mirror 2 of them.  That just cause the mapping to mirror as well, so when I made one registry for one side of the warp engines, 2 of them showed properly, while the other 2 showed them mirrored, and on the opposite side of where they should have been.

Took me a while, but I decided to cut corners.  Needless to say, problem is fixed, and no remapping was required.

What I would really like to know though if there is a way in MAX to merge identical materials into one single material.  Cause the fix I had to make for the engines caused the model to now have multiple identical materials for the engines.

While this doesn't affect how the ship will work in game, it's a major pain when it comes to, say, attaching spec maps for rendering, or even porting the ship to another game like BC because of all the times the same texture would have to be reassigned from the BMP to the TGA in order to make sure the entire ship was mapped.

I'll post some renders, with registries, in a bit.

Hey everyone.

I have come to the decision that I want to include an alternate registry set for this ship upon release, with the name U.S.S. Flying Dutchman.

Thing is, I can't think of a good registry number for her.  I'm open to suggestions.  The suggestion I like most of all I shall use.  :-D

According to Wikipedia, the Dutchman sailed from Holland in 1751.. so add 1000 = 2751, mix the digits to put it into a similar range as the registry that you have for the Mars = 2157, which puts it into the "Unknown" class in MP's registry and class list, and 5 digits away from what you currently have.

Just my suggestion.. ;)

Here are some renders of the ship, but this time, with more traditional phaser banks instead of the triangular ones.  Also I have changed the inner warp grille texture, again, to be more traditional.  Same with the hull.

When the ship is released, she will come with both variants, so if anyone wishes to choose between one or the other, they may do so.

Dang it,
In that top Picture there is something wrong in the hulls light map the lights should not be in the middle of the pods door. Looks like another fix will have to done

Ok found it.
You are using the older hull light map for the orginal ship, before you changed the model. You need to use the newer one

The model itself has been hardpointed, and the SFC3 UI has been completed.  I've been working on the storyline for a while.  I've been half lazy, and half suffering from writer's block.

I'm hoping to have the story finished and begin on the specs by Sunday.  Also, I've decided to release a registry pack as a separate download.

Speaking of registry packs, did you ever release the ones or the blanks for the Chabot?
I know DarkThunder was waiting for those.
Never did finish the More Excelsior looking version of that ship either, guess I should see if I saved them somewhere.

WHOOPS!!!!!

Let me see if I still have them somewhere.  :-p

If and when I find them, I'll upload them to SFC3Files.com.

I still need to find someone to make me some replacement parts for the original Chabot.  Then again you said you weren't interested in making textures for the pre-refit version.

Stories are done.  Specs, done.  The ship works nicely in SFC3.

Now, just have to make some registries for the other ships, pack them up, get some in game shots, and post the babies for download.

Anyone wanna help?  :-D

As suggestion for the registry of the flying dutchman: The first reference in print to the ship itself appears to be in Chapter VI of George Barrington's Voyage to Botany Bay. This was written in 1795. Thus how does NCC 1795 sound? (unless that's taken).

I was asking if anyone wanted to help with in game screenshots.  Keep in mind, the ship is only for SFC3 right now.

I have blanks for the entire ship.  GAFY provided them for me.  That's how I've been able to make registries.  The registries you see in the renders are done by me.

I have 3dsMax at home, and it shouldn't be that had to get hp/dp's on the ship..

The trick for me though is more finding time to get into IM.. unless someone is a night owl, by the time I get a chance to get into IM, it'll be around 2300 or so MST, and for the guys across the Pond, they're on their way to work and on this side of the pond, most people have been in bed for a bit..

I don't have it for download anywhere right now.  You'll have to get it from me through IM.

The ship's already hp/dp for SFC3.  I just don't do SFC1/2/OP hardpoint arrangements.

As for being a nite owl, I've been known to have extremely odd hours.  :-D

Sorry, had some late night errands to run.

You know, bodies to bury, dead to raise, ATMs to stop by to take some money out of my checking account, places to go.  That sort of thing.

Actually, Desty Nova started using it, turned Atra on to it, and I dig it enough to use it too ... and if you should fill up the space, register for a new one ... it's unlimited, to my knowledge ... that and the easy management ... that really helped me decide where I was moving Planet Mudd.

(that sounded more like a late night commercial than an endorsement ... lol)

I like the Dalek opponent you got there!  ;D

It is interesting to see how much light maps added to the ships in the games of SFC 2 and 3. It really allows the ships to look less less like models in a game and more of a scene from a movie.

So did you get to play with all three versions atheorhaven?
And you might want to add the red do not walk past this point red boxes around the phasers I seem to have forgottten.

Thanks.. made him myself.. it also comes in a squad version, and I think flying against it is more eyecandy and fun.  Haven't released it yet though..

I have.. I had SFC 1 (though I no longer can find anything other than the demo), have SFC 2 EAW and OP and the demo, and have SFC 3 that Nanner picked up for me to playtest the G@W mod as we wee developing it.  But I haven't tried out this ship yet in 2 or 3..

Nah,
All you do is make a templet and just copy them from ship to ship, takes 5 minutes to do,Ok two templets swo 10 minutes.
How many different registries did you do anyways?

Plus I have allot of WIPS ppl don't know about that I can use as Bribery Like this Terran_Anubis_v2

I have my registries saved in PSD files, so I can always just swap the texture out and just regenerate the individual registry sets for the saucers.

And GAFY......DAMN YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So when can I get me hands on that retexture of my Terran Anubis?

Go to SFC3Files.com and search for Bellerophon, but I have a fixed version.  I recently repaired a couple little problems I didn't discover when I originally did the kitbash.  She's my TNG refit for the Akula Class.

After seeing that one I think I will wait and see what your next attempt at it looks like.

So the Anubis is off to Cent for a few minor fixes, for the Federation Version. Once I get the corrected model I will see about reducing the textures to a more releasible sized set and Add registyries to it.

So Alec where are you at with the Mars?

SFC 1 and 2 conversions are complete, tested in SFC 1.  SFC 2 test is today, was up until 3am putting together a new loft bed for the kid (the Tormso, and what a pain to get together).

Once the SFC 2 test is done, finished packages will come back, and then he should be good for release.  :)

Well, thought I'd give everyone an update.

I've gotten the rehardpoints from Atheorhaven, and am just waiting for the damage textures for SFC3.

In the meantime, I thought I'd show some SFC3 screenshots.

Keep in mind, I'm not the best when it comes to screenshots.

Bummer,

Looks like you are going with the more standard looking version. Anyways have you tried to fix the Phaser boxes yet?
Just so you can learn alittle more about how PSP, PS works?

Already did.  And I'm gonna do in game screenshots of the alternate version too.  Don't worry.  I just had these textures in for game testing purposes.

A TMP battleship against a couple TNG heavy cruisers and battlecruiser.

you should put a peice of trim around the place where the pylon enters the saucer on the mars, it will make it look less like it's just stuck on.

It would require reworking part of the model and major remapping of the aft saucer, which I can't do, and am not willing to do.
