Is the only map editing program around the one with the server kit? (artifex)

Was wondering was trying to start a map from scratch with it, and it doesn't play well with me.  If it is the only option guess it will be a long time editing a map out.  But heck if it was easy there would be lots of maps out there.  (figure it must get easier to use the more you play with it)

 Thanks.

Hmmm, open eyes put foot in mouth.  (my usual way of doing things).

Just went to the download area, and low and behold a map editor is there.  Giving it a shot.

Amazing what you find when you actually look.

*edit*
okay, same program.  Grrr

thanks, might take you up on that.

Yeah, it does suck.  The part I was having problems with is setting up the new map.

I entered the size, and it gave me a blank map with hexes I couldn't edit.  Going to try again alittle later today.

(then finish trying to get the server kit up and running, ack, so much to work on and learn.  And it is so logical on how it runs.  :P)

When creating a new map always select and save as starfleet command metaverse map.

After choosing the size of your map, smaller is better.

After this you get to the Available Properties window. Double click once on Economic. You will see it added to the right column. 100% of the hexes will now have an economy of whatever value is listed there, usually default is 5.

You can then add in other properties like impedence, better at 1, and then Strength, Region, etc. Play around with what properties of terrain you allow to be 100%. You might want a mixture of asteroid, nebula and empty hexes. It will be randomly seeded. You can similarly do the same to Regions and in the right column use the drop down menu after clicking on each one to change the race. Problem is that there is no visual filter for seeing terrain. So you have to zoom in to see it. Bad idea to put planets in nebulas.

There's a lot to it, but that will get you started. ;)

okay that works.  Now to work out the map, then move on to getting the sillly serverkit running.  Who knows in about a week maybe a small test war server will be up.
