HD signal on Comcrapstic cable
« on: December 12, 2007, 01:03:42 pm »
Having just purchased an LCD HDTV with an internal QAM tuner I've been researching my options for receiving HD signals from my provider Comcast. Confusion and conflicting info about this. Their webpage states, in a roundabout way, that several HD channels are available in the Standard package I already subscribe to. Further diving amongst other forums brings out the fact that this is leagal FCC requirement of them. How to view those channels is a matter of conflicting stories from a Comcast phone rep ( only an HD signal box needs to rented ), to their online Q&A support ( have to subscribe to a Digital package ), to TiVo forum threads suggesting its as easy as rescanning and somehow inputting channels in decimal increments ( how was never revealed ).

Anybody out there with an HDTV set and Comcast? How are you getting your signal?

With TiVo? How are you getting your signal?

Well with Cablevision we just rent an HD box and they give us HD (It was only $5 a month more which is paltry when you think about it). We're really into ESPN-HD and Nat'l Geographic HD. Of course we also get HBO (King Kong in HD is our new favorite movie). I dunno why Comcast would be giving you such a hard time.

If only Verizon had a traffic/weather channel though. Peak hours really bring the quality down...

So far we've been using Cablevision for TV and Verizon for everything else (internet/phone). And they just put in FiOS! Tried Cablevision's service and it just didn't work too well. For some reason the modem just wouldn't work for more than 5 minutes. DSL is slow but reliable (no interrupted service in the 5 years we've had it)

Well it turns out that I've got both Comcast reps lying. I removed the Tivo and VCR from my signal so its just straight cable feed right to the LCD HDTV and sure enough the inialization program sifted the signal through the QAM and found an additional 20+ plus channels, 10 of those being HD signals.

Point is moot though since I've now discovered that the Tivo (series 2) is a blockage for those additional signals. Appearantly I need the newer Tivo or Digital signal. So perhaps a half truth on the reps part?
