USS IOWA (NCC-1525)
Federation New Light Cruiser (+ Refit)

Constructed at Andor Shipyards.

Keel Laid:    25 November 2273
Completed:    13 October 2274
Commissioned:    09 December 2274

The USS IOWA was one of many variations produced during the production run of the Kearsarge Class New Light Cruiser. Andorian engineers successfully lobbied Starfleet's Ship Specifications Review Board to allow construction of a new hull design based on the Andorian shipbuilding principle of a single flattened hull with integrated warp nacelles. Starfleet Command was slowly coming to accept the usefullness of such a design, however the Review Board insisted that the nacelles be placed on support pylons away from the primary hull, citing safety concerns.

The IOWA was powered by the SSWR-XVB matter / anti-matter reactor, a compact and efficient design that proved effective when combined with the configuration of the IOWAs hull. Broad, sturdy support pylons attached the nacelles to the bottom aft of the ship. They were also spaced farther outboard than the original Kearsarge configuration. The new design solved the Kearsarge's greatest weakness: a lack of structural integrity during high warp combat manuvers. Sensor pods and a weapons assembly were attached to a 'rollbar' across the top aft section of the primary hull.

The design was quite successful in achieving its goals. Andorian ship design became more closely integrated into overall Starfleet ship design philosophy. Many innovations in the design of the IOWA were directly incorporated into the MIRANDA class light cruiser some ten years later.

The IOWA served with distinction during the General War and the ISC War of Pacification. She earned 10 Battle Stars and was never seriously damaged in combat. Ironically, her worst damage was suffered during a gunnery exercise. An unstable phaser capacitor in her #2 phaser bank ruptured, killing 47 crew. She returned to Utopia Planitia, Mars on 25 April 2289 where she was decommissioned and placed in the mothball reserve fleet.

I created this model using the hard work of others. Without their efforts, this model would never have been built. I intend for it to enhance the gameplay of myself and others and not for my own glory or aggrandizement.

It looks nice, but did you move the phaser turrets around?  The ventral saucer and both sets of aft turrets are outside of their ovals.  Maybe you could make the ventral aft into Ph1's and get rid of the dorsal phasers, since the roll bar is obstructing them.  You might put PH3's on the bottom of the saucer, since their ovals are there.

Ugh...thanks for pointing that out to me. A new version is ready for download at BattleClinic.

Edit: The reason those ventral phasers were outside their ovals is likely the result of my stretching the hull. The texture got stretched and the phaser turrets were out of alignment with the texture. Again, thanks for pointing that out to me.

That's TMP era, this is a TOS design. Starfleet had already done it's TMP refits in 2270. The Miranda was in production already. Ya may wanna change those  ;)
