Dose anyone here play "Star Port - Galatic Empires", the online multiplayer cross between Elite, Space Empires and Asteroids??

It is very addictive.

It differs from Elite in that you can attempt to haggle the prices when buying and selling, can land colonists and set up your own colonies, kill aliens and steal their planet, kill other players and steal their planets, play pirates, upgrade your ship or simply buy a bigger one, etc.

However, the biggest attraction is the ability to form powerful corporations with "allies" and "freinds" to domnate areas of space.

And I'm CEO of the "Czech Beer Drinkers Inc.", which is running in the campaign with 11 in the title (Can't remember the exact name!!).

It's kind of addictive and easy to pick up with a huge galaxy to explore and exploit.

I haven't tried it myself but it is on the Games sublist of Free Software list in the Engineering Forum along with a variety of other games that you might find interesting.

My son started playing it today and spent 12 hours logged on, eventually carving out a colony on some rock around some star.

Me?? I've lost 2 x colony transports trying to find somewhere to dump a colony. All the Class M worlds are not only taken but heavily defended by either corproations or in territory infested by pirate cartels.

played through a couple of the two week campaigns with some guys i knew a long time ago
It is kinda fun, but its very easy for someone else to exploit any systems you set up and develop if you aren't there in a big decked out ship to protect it. Don't be surprised to find that colony you parked at overnight gone, and your ship podded once newbie protection runs out. Haggling is kinda fun, and the prices do fluctuate as people move goods through the system, so be careful not to flood the market on short path if that's your plans for cash generation.
If you're out there to "win", you pretty much have to find a nice big chunk of isolated space to build up and secure it's borders as best as possible while scoring as many kills/colony captures as possible.

For panzer, try avoiding those areas that people have been reported fighting near, so you don't get caught in a firefight on one of those slower ships. You might also want to bring along an escort or two if you can manage it. You can also try going for colonies that people have already set up once the protection time has ended. Don't be afraid to run from a fight, or to use station/planet jumping to hide if you're stuck in a bad neighborhood.

I plant mines around those large star that have a huge gravity well, the ones that you have to orbit under power to break free. I've managed to catch a lot of ships like that!!

I'm playing in the 11th Dimension game at the moment and doing OK after managing to sneak a colony into a system that the Civil II corporation owns. They missed one ice bound Class P world or ignored it because it was infested with aliens...... not anymore it isn't, well I left a few as a deterant.

We'll see if it is still there. Its made two days so far!!

How difficult is it to get into playwise? I was looking through the beginner guides on the forum and it seemed a bit complicated. Should I just jump in on one of the noob servers and learn as I go?

You can jump right in, though i would suggest do one of the shorter ones to get the hang of it

I'm running in the 11th Dimension game at present.

I have 2 colonies, a weapons factory and my deoyed defences managed to shoot down the top ranking player twice. I deployed the defences well away from my star system, which is already colonise by the top corporation. I'm sort of stelthily barricading my self into a star cluster and will then start invading all the system within the cluster.

If you ant to be a complete and utter bastard, just plant compound mines around all the large starts and watch how many victims they claim.

Best to do this on the popular main travel route corridors.

Best to set a coloney up as Socialist, as the non-pay to use health system that is inherent, has the lowest death rate and the fastest rate of growth, compared to the other three options.

I run the "Czech Beer Drinker's Inc." corporation in both the 11th Dimension and the Perma Pax games.

I just dived straight in and played.

After all it's only Elite crossed with Space Empire really.

What you all talk about sounds like the old PBS game called Tradewars.  Anyone remember that game and just how similar are these two games as far as how they work?

Ive played it, got tired of it after a month or so...you have no chance against a decked out human if you are not decked out and cannot get away unless you park on a base that cost you a lot! Sometimes the big dogs give away lots of money b/c once you have some good colonies, it racks up.

I would play a little if I was invited into someones corporation and supplied w/ some cash...

Keeping a colony going is hard work until it can become self sufficient. I let two wither and die as it was easier to build up just two, with one contributing materials for the other.

I ended up having to part exchange my nice fast freighter for a clumsey and slow "Whale" class freighter just to keep up with the resources ferrying to and fro.

I managed to take over two planets in the middel of Civil II territory, so am cunningly hiding behind their defence barriers without them knowing, at the moment. Anyone coming into the systems thinks that they've been shot down by Civiil II defences and not my turrets. If I'm discovered I'm hoping to work out a deal as I'm defending their colonies for free in this backwater star cluster.

Yep that sounds like Trade Wars without the graphical map.  Is there "Federation and Pirate" classes in this game?

No the only weapons in that game were fighters and mines.  But a lot of what you speak of screams Trade Wars.  Maybe when I reformat/reload my hard drive I'll check this game out.

There are pirates though these seem to mainly be NPC though I have spotted a few PC pirates (and delt with them accordingly!)

There are dozens of different maps and games running with unlimited ot limited corporation memebrship sizes enforced.

Player can also sub-contract to corporations to operate the colony supply runs. I've seen a few offer up the services of thier barges for hire.

The wars or skirmishs between the larger of the numerous corporations are interesting as others seek to affiliate to one side or another. Myself, I just move in after the battle and loot the debris Ferrengi style!!

I received the UFO - Alien Unknown sequel trilogy for Christmas, so I'll probally be tied up in that for the next few years, bearing in mind that it takes a couple of years to complete just one game of UFO - Alien Unknown from start to finish.

The 1990's PC classic is now downloadable as freeware now under UFO Gold or UFO - Allien Unknown Gold Edition, which has been fixed to run on Vista and XP.

As an online game with players involved in a joint X-COM project to defeat the server contrlled "Aliens", this would be the ultimate online game experience, especially if the "Away Missions" , "Base Assaults", "Base Defends" and "Terror Missions" could be rigged as first person team shoot em ups!!

My friend and I checked this game out a little while back and this is in fact a updated version of Trade Wars.  It looks like some of the names were changed to prevent any copyright infringement.  The way that a player moves across the map has been changed from a text based movement system.  But this is Trade Wars right down to the pirate bounty list.  It's nice to see that this game lives on in some form but I just don't have time for it right now.
