Regarding the Forge
« on: November 12, 2007, 01:08:47 am »
I'm thinking, since I'm basically tired of getting complaints no matter what is done, that we will be reverting to a random map in the folder (There are about 25..) and setting it up so that there are no alliances what-so-ever.  Full on free for all, no Alliance no Coalition, just good old-fashioned mayhem.

Thoughts?

random map is cool (as long as there are no rocks ) but don't like the no alliances option though, a good three way is always fun though ;)

Random maps are acceptable, wouldn't mind making sure planets aren't in Nebula's (a lot of them on the current Forge) since planetary assaults are impossible to win in a Neb.
Dislike the idea of no Alliances at all, and dislike 3 ways even more (someone ALWAYS gets double teamed).
No Alliances are fine when you have a high population of players to fill out the races, but with todays current level of activity, a few races would have 98% of the pilots and a few would have none.
Ah....remember when you sat refreshing waiting for an opening in a server because it was full just to play for a couple hours...?

The Syndicate withdraws from the Forge and forbids any Syndicate members from participating in it.  This action is taken by the Syndicate due to the actions of a Coalition member.

wHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU GET COMPLAINTS IS, oops caps, is to tell em to stfu and just be happy for what they get. Cant please everyone. Partially why there hasnt been another server from me or DH. Not enough appreciation for the countless hours invested making a server work.

Question for you, Braxton... How are you making a random map and getting the map econ levels done to work with the econ gf? I never knew random maps could be setup to work.

Basically, just taking that mouse and clicking about 20ish times for each race in a random spot.  With the OCI, I'm not so worried about econ and all that, since it is just a fun server rather than hardcore campaign.

Hrmmm ok. It's my experience that economic changes on the map lead to a less stable server. Since you are using OCI ship purchasing, try a campaign with no economy... I'd be quite interested to see what happens.

you cant please everyone and if you try I have found you end up pleasing no one so the thing to do is what you want to do and if they play they play and if they don't so be it (and I still like the 3 way just cuse I be a dirty old man )

That's kind of suprising, since little has been said to me in the way of complaints outside of the fighter bugs with HoT, and the usual one or 2 bugs with missions.

Braxton...

Bah!

Fragmentation was fun!  Little to no problems...serverside...made for little to no complaints...real ones anyway...stopped playing that one after objectives were met and all enemy HW were taken...still think its a shame we lost this one...liked that map...

Hammer of Thor was fun...the fighter issue and stability being the only real complaints on that one...and that was SFHQ's baby...so you cannot take the full load on that one...stopped playing this one as the stability issues coincided with alot of downtime when halo 3 came out and i began multiplaying on xbox...then it went away...

and you cant take responsibility for the complaints on Bonks Forge...either!  well ok...but only those that pertain to it not showing up in the campaign selector...but only if you got the keys...

someone will always complain about rules...thats pretty much a given...same thing goes for stability...but stability is key here...rules are BS...

we still have a handful or two of consistent players...probably twice that amount in those that will come to something really serious...

with the intention to make the dynaverse stable for those number that WILL play...if we can make it stable so ALL are most are playing at the same time...how many more would come back?

how many still read and post on dyna or sfc2.net forums that dont play anymore...alot!

we are a unique community...so i wouldnt be surprised to see many show interest if we can prevail all this BS to get to our goal...

and you know ive offered to help in anyway i can braxton...if i lose some gaming hours to designing...for many many more hours of play time...how does that outweigh the time consumed making it?  when u put all the BS aside?

lets not lose our focus in the BS...

Hmmmm ... I'm curious too!   Hafta go give it a try.

Oh - just a reminder - if you go with the "no alliances" option the missions will continue to draft other races as your ally anyway, so sometimes you'll be fighting against race X with allies from race X.

That was actually why I was thinking it might be fun.  "Allies of Opportunity" rather than paper contracts.  Fed, Klingon, Romulan and a Hydran meet up... Fed and Hydran go "YAR! We don't like those two, lets work together and kill 'em!" blah blah blah some ships explode.

Allies of opportunity seems like a great idea! I'm surprised I never thoutgh of it, hehe. PvP missions completely strip AI, tho right? It'd likely be entirely unbalancing otherwise. Dave, you do have total war missions available do you not?

Nah, I've just been too busy with a new job (But I'm starting to get the itch to kill Klingons again . . .)   :D

Best way to handle complaints, ignore the stupid ones!  Often people have a legitimate gripe or will point out something that you missed.  Work on those, ignore the ones that are trivial.

I always knew a server was balanced when both sides complained.

I think there needs to be some discourse on how to complain. Some people dont do it very well. (me) Right now it seems if you open your mouth about something negative in a campaign, you're slighting the server admin... which isnt true. I do think PM complaints should be done away with, tho. That's taking it out of the realm of public feedback and making it personal. But there should always be open discourse allowed for disagreements and complaints about a server... I believe there should be a complaints thread for every server. Up till now most server admins all have a good idea what everyone likes. And unfortunately, there is a 50/50 split over some pretty significant issues to the point that no matter what is done to appease, someone will get pissed off. But general helpful comments and expressions of opinions on campaign decisions shouldnt be squelched but encouraged.

Most of the "mainstream" scripts strip AI, but even in PvP you might draft one player of race X as your ally and another as your enemy.

Heh, guess that could still have some entertaining implications - the one you draft as an ally wouldn't be able to fire at you, but could still t-bomb and tractor you (and would start out in a good position to do so).

The total war scripts haven't been updated in eons and eons, but I could whap together a new set from the commonly used scripts.
