Curious launching problem with BOTH SFC2 & 3
David Ferrell:
Wasn't there a problem for some people with a Geforce2 MX? This is the card taht Taimat is using.
Anyone? Bueller?
Thanks,
Dave
Taimat:
I just borrowed my friend's copy of SFC3 to play offline, in the absence of a demo, and see if I want to buy it. However, I installed everything, including the dx9 patch but every time I try to play the game, it goes through the "launching" screen, to the screen with all the ships blowing each other up with the unity in the background, then it just shuts down without a word.
Anyway, life continues, and I decide to play SFC2 later that day. Interesting... it gets to the Launching screen, to the title screen, then freaking dies just like sfc3. Anyone else ever have this problem? I tried the obvious, restarting windows, did nothing.
1.4ghz celeron
256 megs of ram
Winxp home
Geforce2 MX
I have no idea what version of Dx I have, nor do I know where I can find it. I know I have later than 8.0, but I don't know if I have 9.0
Also, SFC2 is fully patched to 2.0.3.6
Any idea what's wrong, or is this a feature to keep me from playing games and make me do my assignments like I know I should
Corbomite:
Run DXDIAG to find your version of Direct X (click RUN in the START menu and type that in). Make sure all of your drivers are up to date and that your version of Windows is up to date as well (all the new upgrades, whatever your version). Turn off all antivirus software and firewall software and anything else that would count as an unnecessary application program. If you still have problems after that come back.
Taimat:
Ok, so I ran that program, and I have dx8.1. I turned off my firewall, and I foolishly don't have any antivirus software, and the game still didn't work. Arg. I have one of the service packs for XP, my Nvidia drivers are top notch... I can't see a problem here. What other suggestions are there?
EDIT
One other thing to note is that every so often, out of no where there is this error message for a program simply called WMI, and I always say don't send error report. I wonder if that can do anything. Curious... if I run DXdiag, that error thing pops up, I close it, and it appeared that Dxdiag failed, then about a minute later, it launches
Cleaven:
Start SFC2 from starfleet2.exe and not sfc2.exe. See if that helps.
