What's the current view on buying a Dell computer?
« on: November 17, 2007, 03:11:15 pm »
I'm looking to buy a new computer soon and Dell seems to be the only way to buy a system that can still come with XP on it.  I seem to recall a few years ago comments being made here about spyware and such with Dell.  The xps 720 looks like the closest thing they have to what I would like.  Thanks for any input / help with this.

I bought a Dell Dimension E521 with Vista on it and I am pretty happy with it.  It was a model that I could have bought with XP on it, but they offered something like an additional 200 bucks off for the Vista package so I got the Vista one.  I figure I'd need to upgrade at some point in the future when they get Vista sorted out.  Long story short this Dell machine has worked for me without a problem for the past 6 months and it's actually an older model.  I am sure someone will offer some horror story, but I think they are one of the top PC sellers, so I can't imagine they are that awful.  Ultimately, someone will tell you to build your own, but if I would have built the system that I currently have it would have been far more expensive than the Dell package that I did buy.

System Specs:

Dell Dimension E521
AMD64x2 5000+
2G DDR2 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3
250GB SATA HD

We get a few dells and they all are pretty good.  Since ours are for moblity and business, I can only comment on their Laptops however.  From a business sense, they are really good, reliable, and I like how each has options in how you make them.

However, I've heard from those that don't get new comps for the their businesses often, that these computers are a nightmare to upgrade, and that their desktops are not as good as the laptops and have a tendency to die rapidly.  In otherwords I've HEARD not experienced, that their desktops are really bad.  However, their laptops and Dell seem great for what I've handled in regards to business for laptops.

The dell xps 720 looks nice but is several hundred dollars more than a top of the line HP system. The catch is that I can get windows xp media 2005 on the dell and have to put up with vista on the HP.

I've pointed a friend to Dell, and my folks.  I personally wouldn't buy from them cause I'm a control freak and like building my own computer (which is what I would personally recommend if you care to take the time and learn... that and have a few buddies who have built machines walk ya through it).  Overall though, dells ain't bad systems,.  If your not sure what to get run it by us and we can give you advice on your selections.

I used to own an inspiron 8600 laptop, or as I prefer to call it the craptop.  I'm not an expert, but the thing had to be made from second rate parts.  Over three years, both the original motherboard and harddrive failed.  In addition, I went through three power adapters.  Their customer service is absolutely horrible.  They use a checklist that does not always fit the problem.  For example, they made me go thorugh their insane diagnostic routine when the power adapters broke.  I had to borrow adapters from other people.  The reason the routine is so insane is because the adapter has a built in LED.  The LED goes on when the adapter is working whether or not it is plugged into the system.  In my case, the LED would not go on, but they still made me determine that it was not the system.  I did not know that pure evil existed on earth until I dealt with Dell computer.
