User name change
« on: October 31, 2007, 09:14:17 am »
Hey folks - I just wanted to let you know that I've changed my user name from redneckf15 to Shadowfleet. I never really gave the callsign Redneck much thought since I'm from the south (USA) but apparently it carries some connotations with it that I prefer not to be associated with my standing in this community or any other.

 I thought a redneck was someone from humble and somewhat uneducated beginnings who works hard and thus has a red neck (from the sunburn). Of course I knew there was another side but figured that very few gave credence to the definitions that included bigotry. As I've travelled I realise that is not the case.

Thus the name change - in a few weeks it will be really fitting as several releases are in the works under my new namesake  :).

I can see why you changed the name but if some people dont like the term you like, that dont mean you ought to change it.
Bear it with pride regardless of what they may say. :p
Hell we still got the swastika in few military related things (flags, medals) and the ironcross even though the germans gave em a bit of a bad name. :D

Airforce cadet school flag in a parade. Dont open if you dont want to see a swastika  :P

I though a redneck was someone from the country as well. I don't want to know what the other connotation fro it would be. I prefer to go through life completely oblivious. I wear my name ModelPeon with pride.

Mackie, doesn't a swastika go the other way? I understood that there are two different symbols, one clockwise and one counter clockwise. Don't ask me what they mean, I don't know.

In the inverted direction from the direction that the Nazis chose, it was considered a symbol of good luck, the other, not so much.

Think it was Zara that had a bit of a problem with it a few months back..

The reasons for a name change is your prerogative of course.

However, bowing to political correctness would not be one of them.

IMHO.

Best of luck with the fleet.

It's a Buddhist symbol; of that I'm positive.  What it exactly symbolizes... well, I think it has to do with the karma wheel (no, not the infamous point system here).

Redneck was originally a term for manual labourers from Ulster County, Ireland and it did indeed originally get its meaning from the labourers getting sunburnt fro toiling in the open air. Many of these people settled all over the Eastern and Southern US, but it only really seems to have stuck in the South, where they continued to be manual labourers in far greater heat and sun.

Over the centuries since, it's taken a new meaning: poor white trailer trash. Syill, people make a living out if it, like Jeff Foxworthy.

And yes, the Nazis spoiled the swastika for the Hindus, who had it for thousands of years. Now even the word seems evil-looking.

I'm sorry you felt the need to change your handle, '15, but people are sooo judgemental these days. Keep yer ears on, y'hea?  ;D
