D.net IRC Server
« on: October 28, 2007, 03:06:42 pm »
I would like to announce that the D.net IRC server is now available for regular use by anyone and everyone!  In addition to the chat channels found on dynaverse servers, we have several channels set up for public use, including the #Dynaverse that is accessible through the Java Chat Applet!

Additionally, channels may be requested for fleets, meetings, etc.; simply send a PM to Stoney or myself.

Server Address: irc.xenocorp.net
Port: 6999

You're welcome. Firesoul and I were quite happy when we found a working ircd for SFC (UnrealIRCd) back in 2001.

You should be OK with this recently modified unreal configuration so long as any D2 servers can still create broadcast channels as operator and create channels at will. (Has that been tested yet?)

edit: Actually I see two PrimeRadiants (from the D2 servers) in the #Dynaverse channnel, never saw that before - and only the channels for Strayy's server are up, where are the other ones (from the second PrimeRadiant)?

Well, DarkElf installed D.Net's IRC server originally, and then I made some modifications in the config... and it sat that was as is until Braxton upgraded / added the services.

Considering the upgrades have just been done, I'd say we're still testing to make sure all the different servers can connect / create channels.

Your welcomed to assist if you'd like, Bonk.

Seem to have a problem with the irc connection....  all the channels come up, except for the general channel, getting the error "failed to create chat channel #general@ "

DarkElf! I miss DarkElf too. You can all blame him for getting me started on running OP servers. ;) I still have the chat logs from the times he helped me out. (The dang OP server would not run from the command line like eaw, still doesn't...)

I'm thinking with this setup that we'll have to add sufficient permissions for dynaverse server admins like strayy to connect and create the required 18 channels by request. (and perhaps update if their IP address changes? - as the dynaverse server is not currently capable of an irc account login that I am aware, unless it could be passed in the connect string specified in chat.gf - worth a try...)

Actually, the server allows anyone to make a channel, you don't need to be registered.  No settings along those lines have changed at all.  The only real change was the addition of IRC services to assist in operating and maintaining channels upon request (You have to tell the service to join the channel to be able to use the services) as well as register nicks.  You do not need a registered nick to make a channel though.  Most likely, it is just an error in the serverkit.  I've noticed that The Forge once and a while will not load one of the pirate races (Can't remember which offhand...).

Ah, cool. Strayy's issue was probably just a connect timeout on the creation of that channel.

Does it happen every time now Strayy?

Yes, it still wont connect to the general chat channel....  all other channels connect.  Reassigned the EAW server to the xenocorp irc server, and it wouldnt create the fed chat channel... put the EAW server back to peerchat, works fine

Thanks for the info Strayy. I'm sure that will be helpful to Braxton.

I guess it's time to dig into the kit source and see what is special about the general chat channel and why this change would affect it.

Oh, wait, sounds like you might be hitting a channel limit... are you creating other channels on the irc server from the same IP  as well as running the OP server? (ie using the chat applet). If so, try just running the game server and don't connect to the irc server with anything else and see if that corrects the problem. If so, we can just increase the max channels settings by a few so you can still create other channels from the same IP while running an OP server.

But...  both the OP and EAW servers have been running on the same machine without any irc problems before.....

None of the channel limit stuff was changed, but I will go in and look about upping it a tiny bit.
