A Thought For New Blood
« on: September 28, 2007, 08:52:54 am »
I have been playing Freelancer lately on the Monkey Universe Server. The Admins there have come up with a brilliant way to bring in new young players. This is for kids 12 and younger. Over there a tag of "Cheeky Monkey" is placed before there name. This tells the hard corp players to take it easy on these kids. Sometimes they don't follow the server rules but then again they might not understand the rules. So far its a big hit over there. I was wondering if it just might be possable to try something like this here. Maybe on a long running server like the Forge.

Oh good.

Maybe we'll pick up a bunch of FBI players as well..  :P

Seems like a good idea Soreyes, of course I'm sure that no one will abuse the system for personal gain.

Well as it is you already must accept the Gamespy little "13 years or older" box when logging into D2&D3, and since it isnt a requirement that you be registered on these forums either to just play the game, then I really cant see how this would be able to be implimented where it validates age(without changing the directory or server kit initial procedure codes). Even so, they can always lie about there age, and there really isnt a good way to prevent that.

Cabin Boy isn't such a good idea..... I mean a kid only has to log on with the handle "Roger" and.... ;D

Actually Roger the Cabin Boy was a character on the BBC kids cartoon series Captain Pugwash. Other characters were Seaman Staines and Master Bates.

The BBC ran it, quite innocently, for serveral years on kid's TV in the 1970's and early 1980's.

It still couldn't beat the ITV kid's show Rainbow for innuendo and joke that only adults could spot.

Anyone in the UK remember the show with the famous quote, "Why don't you try bouncing your balls in time to the music?? If you don't have any balls of your own, ask one of your friends if you can play with theirs!!"

Rainbow was a UK 1970's to 1980's pre Sesame Street type show aimed at small kids, watching with parents, etc.

Perhaps a Cadet moniker would be more approriate for junior players online.

It would be less patronising and more appealing to the kids than the other suggestions.

I wouldn't go too easyy on kids though, as they seem to have a fantical drive to show up older players in online games. Unfortunately, they sometimes uses underestimation by the adults to their advantage.

Do you honestly think that a 13 years or older box is going to stop a 12 year old from playing?  Also, there are other ways of informing them if you don't want to use the forums.  I really don't think it matters though.  The biggest limit to recruitment in this game is the fact that it has been out of production for years.  If its not showing up on the shelf at your local video game store, they're not going to know it exists.

i think it would behoove us not too say take our identities with us to all other games we play...

i think this would not only help to attract new players...but some of old as well...

just something i thought about last night as i got a message from someone named renegade that claimed to know who i was while playing halo3 online...but wouldnt tell me who they were...and although ive heard the voice before...i couldnt put a name to the voice...

and it would be fun to say get together us SFC folks and woop some (enter game)ass!

so feel free to look me up...if i play it...my name is as is here...

I thought of a great way to attract new blood.  Each of us breaks into a local high school, and installs SFC on their computers.  If we are caught we tell the cops we are looking for the nuclear wessels.

Well, I have started with the next best thing.  Got my teen-age son interested in the game (OP), and he has gotten two of his friends interested now.  Only bad thing, can't buy any more copies of the game, so no CD codes for the friends to use.

I did something similar,

I've run into old SFB players in nearly every online game I play (similar interests possibly?) and I'm rounding them all up, giving them the forum addy and screenshots of ingame play.

A couple of them I know IRL literally drooled and couldn't believe the game was put out years ago and they never heard tell of it.

Stay tuned, more as I learn it.. also trying to hunt down some SFCOP sellers w/CD keys.

If anyone is in the position to run computer demos, you might want to load OP on one of the demo machines.

Another thought for new players, young and old alike.

I played SFC for a long time. And was very familliar with all aspects of it. And I still found all the patching, installing shiplists, setting router ports, etc., etc., to be irritating in the extreme.

Any new player to this game, on seeing the number of steps required to actually be able to play, might very well never cross the threshold. Maybe a stickied forum post saying, "New Player? Check in here to get a helpful mentor!" Just some names and email addresses for people to contact to get one on one help with getting everything set up. Having someone on Teamspeak or, for that matter, on the telephone, to walk a new player through all the many hoops and hurdles might keep any that show up here around for a while.
