shiplist question
« on: September 10, 2007, 11:42:12 pm »
I have been playing with shiplists as of late and have a question.

When there are ships of other races put into the race of another what does that do?  I notice that under the Feds, there are gorn, lyran, etc ships listed.  Could someone enlighten me to what that does in the game?  Thanks.

That's part of the trick to make the fighters / PFs for all races work...

The game only looks for the first instance of a given ship (say, L-CVA) to determine if it's a fighter or PF capable ship.  And the game scans top-to-bottom.
It also scans the entire shiplist and pulls all appropriate ships from a given section of the list to populate the shipyards.

So, finding the first L-CVA under the Fed shiplist classifies it as a fighter-carrier, so it can access Lyran fighters.  Meanwhile, it's (second) inclusion in the Lyran section allows it to be bought by a Lyran player.

IIRC, the Gorn are usually used as the donor for all the PFs (Klink, Hydran, ISC, Mirak/Kzinti), and operate the same way...

Of course, that means that any additional fighters and PFs will need to be added to the shiplist in the same way.

The SFC 1 sfcsfb13.txt shiplist works in equally bizare ways.

For instance, there can only be four fighter classes, all Hydran. However, the fighters can be edited to be other race's fighters, if you prefer to play Feds, etc. but they must remain in the Hydran part of the shiplist and be tagged as Hydran.

Only Fed, Hydran and Gorn races are allowed to buy fighters for carrier vessels in Spacedock. You cannot buy fighters for a Klingon, Lyran or Romulan carrier vessel in SFC 1.

Now here's the weird part.... If you have a AI player with a Klingon/Lyran/Romulan carrier vessel it can buy fighters. AI players can buy fighters but Human players cannot as the menu won't appear in the Spacedock options.

This is something to do with the layout of the Spacedock menu for these races, as far as I determined, and altering the layout to come up as the Fed layout would pronally fix this problem. Now how the hell does anyone change the Spacedock menu presentation for the Klingons??!! At the moment Klingon carrier vessels are run as Fed ships in our LAN games.

Another thing with SFC 1, fighters cannot carry Drones, which is an obvious pain. We have to run Klingon ZY fighters with the optional Phaser pack instead of the Drone rack.

If one wants a fighter with Drone then it has to be in the SFC 1 shiplist as a normal ship, as with PFs, but this does give the option for the player to lead a figther squadron into battle.

When buzzing one of Model Please's ships, close up, one can really see the detail put in. Starships are massive when viewed from a small ship like a fighter.

The Klingons have many ways to fry a cat. I prefer to use an L7 Fast Battlecruiser!!
