« on: September 09, 2007, 08:01:33 pm »
trying to use my roomie's computer... but I can't type at all...

Using windowed mode and the no matter what I do... nothing types.

I could work around it if I could log in... but the email and password stuff isn't even showing up...

Any ideas?

Have you tried going back to the desktop while it's running, then clicking on it in the taskbar?

I have...  but that doesn't seem to work when in window'd mode... I should probably add that it is an HD LCD TV... it is in 16 bit color.

Details Bearslayer, we need details!

... but my first guess would be the shortcut, make sure the working directory is present and correct. The easiest way to ensure this is to find StarFleetOP.exe in the installation folder, copy it and paste it as a shortcut on the desktop, then run the game from this shortcut.

... second, try disabling windowed mode, I have found it is variable and just does not work on some hardware. The other possibility is that some other unknown application is stealing focus in the background and you are not seeing this (windowed mode is implicated here).

... OH wait! I remember! The intro video for many was a problem. The shortcut I outline above is the solution. Or a full install of OP+4 also includes a shortcut fix to the game's normal start menu shortcut.

The other trick was sometimes to avoid this one could use the windows menu key to bring up the start menu and OP would minimize, then just click on some empty desktop and then restore the game running in the taskbar.

But just for the fun of it lets test me 'ol search script to see what it finds on 'Search result for "keyboard" in post subjects in all boards within the last decade':
Here's a good one (from the old Taldren forums):
http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,163258826.0.html
or (old forums again  - shortcut again):
http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,163180135.0.html
or (again the old forums and the shortcut or forcing an application focus one way or another):
http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,16354495.0.html
... yup seems to still work ok... those dupes from the old forums gotta go tho, lotta dead weight there the original import (before my time) bugged, I think I could probably fix that with a little time and a few clever queries by now. (the search script would be even faster!  ;D)

Anyway, I'm guessing that one of these common issues is your problem.

EDIT: P.S. note #3 here: http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,163359567.0.html  ;)

If nothing what Bonk suggested has worked, and you think you can work around it while logged into D2, you can try altering the sfc.ini in the [Meta] section to your gamespy username and pass

Details Bearslayer, we need details!

Wide screen HD LCD TV, Samsung 26".  HDVMI cable.

Game worked great on old CRT 21" monitor.

But, IIRC, someone (DH) said you needed to window mode it for widescreen monitors.

So I did that.... dropped the graphics to 16 bit and went with it....

Game loads up... click 'multiplayer', click 'log on to Dynaverse', click that I am an 'adult' and nothing is in the email, password, or screen name boxes.

Can't type anything either....

Can't back up.... have to ctl-alt-del to close it (or right click and hit close on the task bar)

Tried this several times.

Even tried to do multiplayer sessions and where it normally gives you 300 BPV to work with.... it has nothing... can't type it in, nor can you type in a name on the selection screen.

Anything I am missing?

As said above......

Make sure the shortcut you are using goes to starfleetop.exe

Do you have mag's ez-ini installed?  If so, see what the computer's screen resolution is set to, and launch the ez-ini program and see if there is a resolution setting that matches what your computer is running on.  It should.

also, as above, you can go into the game folder and click in the "SFC"  icon (the ini file), and set your username and password at the very bottom under "meta"

Good Luck  ;)
