Any Tall Ships available?
« on: September 03, 2007, 10:36:15 am »

This is kind of a weird question, so I doubt it has ever been done.  But I've seen little girls with pigtails firing plasma torpedos out of their noses in this game, so just in case......

Has anyone (to your knowledge) ever created any Tall Ships for SFCII?  I mean specifically wet-navy sailing ships.  (Frigates, Galleys, Brigs ...... anything with tall masts and canvas sails.)

I've been toying with the idea of how to use the SFCII game engine to represent these ships, but it sure would look pretty if there were some models to go with it.

Not a bad idea - Its not hard to make "Terrain" for SFC either - it could be done to make a waterline.

There have been wet naval warfare games in the past. They are hard to find and are usually aimed at naval enthuiasts, rather like vitual model railway layout packages.

There is a whole load of "new" olde fashione naval terms to understand regarding weapons such as Bow Chasers (the two larger than average forward facing guns on a Galleon, who's role is in the name!!)

Tactics are just as complex and you can cripple an enemy ship by grappling their rigging as you pass and ripping it away. (One of my favourite dirty tricks!!)

I've played wargames, years ago,  with old sail power vessels and it can be fun.

It would be better if there was a game created from one of the normal table top wargames rule packages.

The American Civil War tabletop wargame "Hammering Iron" is a good game to convert onto a computer system. Fighting coastal and river battles on semi-armoured stern or side wheel paddlers, monitors, rail clads  or tin clads. (One of the dumbest ideas in naval history if you know the usual fates of these boats!!)

I don't know how the ships jumping over each other feature in SFC could be overcome?? Also deflecting one ship off of another just before boarding, wouldn't work either, or grappling and pulling in tight alongside either.

It would be interesting though.

If I recall correctly, one of the former Taldren staff members [David Bethke??? I didn't keep the e-mail ;(] wrote in an e-mail to me that the SFC engine was being used for a circa  17th century pirate game. I contacted the Tladren staff in hopes of getting the high poly Mirak and Orion pirate ships used on the SFC:EAW and SFC: OP box covers. I don't recall what the name of the game was...

No. After being advised that he would check with some other people who MIGHT have had the models several months have passed with no further information. I presume that the models are lost, being withheld for financial reasons (?) or nobody has any of the models in a format that can be converted to SFC.

Mr. Warrior, you know me too well. I have a model, and have tested it in SFCIII, but was too embarrased to publish it. The model still exists, but it is no shape to post. Here are some renders of the model:

Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon and Age of Sail II: Privateer's Bounty are both excellent tall ship games with SFC style mechanics. Pirates: Live the Life is also very good. I have been playing it on X-Box the past few days. I really with there were ways to get around the spacey feel of SFC to make it into a better naval game, terrains would be a challange, eliminating ship stacking is probably impossible, but collisions are definitely doable if you don't mind limiting your game to one ship per race.  Any ideas about how to overcome these challenges?

I once tried to make a set of Solar-Sail ships, too. Not quite galleys but a bit more plausible than treasure planet.

Yea i made it last year it was a request from a member here for the Fitzgerald's anniversary. The ship is or was an iron ore carrier i believe in the great lakes.
The download link is there should be working. It was tested in sfc2 should work in 3 also.
I don't have a plastic model for reference i was sent 5 or 6 pics of art work and 2 real time pics of the sister ship to the Fitz.

I was refering to the left hand starship in the link banner.

Not sure why it has a second engine added, as the Jackil's schematic has just the top one.

I've been after one of those for a while now.

I didn't like the original it made more seance to me using 2 impulse as it could be used for moving stardocks and small bases with its over powerd tractors etc. Some say it needs 2 warps also but i don't agree as the ship is limited to its class and use.

Jackill's shows proper tow ships for object movement at Warp Speed.

Accrding to SFB, all spacedocks have a songle impulse engine and a speed on 1 in game. Also all are modestly armed, except the Klingon one, which is equiped with a few Drones.

One engine works out fine as the ship is ballanced for its power demands and role.

Someone already has a Federation bouy and defence satelilte deployment ship on battleclinic.
