Can anyone help me with soundcard (SB Live) / EAW
« on: January 22, 2003, 11:48:06 am »
I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with a sound issue in EAW and OP.

My crew voices can be heard at the initial Red Alert, and I never hear from them again.  Music plays continuously without problems, and other sounds are OK.

I just traded in my reliable and trusty 450 Mhz system for a new Dell.  Sound hardware is SB Live card using the drivers from the Creative Website dated 5/2000 and also the OEM drivers from Dell.  Direct X versions tried so far are 8.0 and 8.1.  I checked the voices zip file, and it is not read-only.  Voices = 1 in SFC.INI and it is set to read-only.  Operating system is Win98SE.  I plan to try ratcheting down sound acceleration, but I was hoping that somebody has run into this before.

Can anyone point me to the right drivers, Direct X version, or game setting that might cause the dropout of crew voices?

There is a setting within the game that sets the level of verbosity. I can't recall exactly where right now but it does involve getting to the keymap screen and toggling to an Options button somewhere.

Try changing your 'Voices=1' setting to 'Voices=3'.  Also, change your sfc.ini file's read-only status.  It shouldn't be read-only.

If that doesn't work, try reducing the acceleration your SBLive is using.

Thank you very much.  That is exactly what I needed.  I have forgotten about that setting.  I am glad that one of my teething problems is not hardware related.
