Those A2 guys really get under my skin, they bury sod importers and then ban people from boards for posting information about sod conversion because they are so scared of people stealing their low-poly work and then they go and steel stuff from another group who has a good-faith open-model file format community? Makes me absolutely sick!

Got an e-mail of this guy in the past mins that has the ask for permission in it and it explains that the post of the pics should have been some kind of asking for permission.
I told him that he always should ask for permission via e-mail and if there is no answer that it means no.

!'m still thinking over this problem and decide if i will release or let somone convert models from me for the public.
Better late than never I guess...
Whichever you decide to do, I'll back your decision, as this is about principles.
Again I'll say Good-luck mate.

Maybe, but this is such elementary crap that I can't help laughing in disgust. The general policy for public model use in the SFC community has more or less been the same for almost a decade and applies to nearly every instance of mod theft I'm privy of - if modifications are made for one's personal enjoyment, it obviously doesn't apply. However, if they're made with the intent of public distribution, you need to ask the owner before you so much as zip the file and upload it into e-mail. Assuming you're given the okay, you need to ensure that appropriate credit is accurately indicated in a seperate readme document. And last, but certainly not least, you can't, under any circumstances, draw or accept a profit for it.

It sucks that someone is lending serious thought to quitting modeling, but when people can't follow simple instructions that a non-modder could tell you. . .

I think that Terra does have a point though.

I mean, the dude is taking away Terra's right to create models for A2 by pre-empting him with Terra's own work!!

I used to, and still do occasionally, for some motorcycle magazines. I've found my work plagarised all over some sites but I see that more as homage rather than an insult.

However, if I was planning to, at some future date, supply a feature to a site or magazine ut discovered that some SOB had somehow obtained my work, tagged it as his or her own and had it published then I'd be extremely pissed off!!

If Terra was planning to post A2 versions of his models then he's been denied that option now.

It is a curtesy to just ask, "May I convert one of you models to this game format??"

I convert some SFC 2, EW and OP models to SFC 1 so I can use them privately. However if I posted these models as SFC 1 version I would seek the original owner's permission due to the fact that all I've done is a bit of data jugling and not creativity.

I always add a credits list and state, if the design was from a book, the author and book as well. Don't forget there is copyright on ships in literature as well!! <Pauses to imaging "Models Please" contemplating if he should contact Jackills for permission of his recent excellent releases!! And then remembers being guilt to same misdemeanor!!>

Copying stuff to another game format without permission is a strict NO NO!!

I recently gave permission for something to be crossed over to A1 which was OK with me. It is nice to know these things.

The Klingons have many ways to fry a cat. I prefer to use an L7 Fast Battlecruiser!!

I got an email back from Lord Schtupp that literally rocked me back in my chair when I read it.

He told me: "...you rock!"

I'd asked him for permission to use his shuttlebay mesh and textures in my own kitbashing. And he told me I rocked for just asking.

While it made me in particular feel very good for doing so, it made me feel kinda bad for the community in general that so much gratitude was displayed for such a simple act of patience and courtesy.

Did he by chacne hint at finishing anything in his wip folder? And schtup does rock, he gave me the ok to use alot of his tos (along with atra) in my never finished tos BC mod. I might finish it, but I've been secretly hoping for the last 2-3 years that schtupp would finish those killer carriers.

Whew! For a moment I thought I might have been the culprit just because I asked!

Since I didn't see a reply I figured Terra didn't see the original post so I was gonna wait 2-3 more months before I bothered him again to "bring my request to his attention".

---
If I had ever taken no reply as a yes it was only when certain individuals were unreachable (ie) "This person has been away from the CNC community over a year and with no contact info, but you could leave them a pm anyway..." :)

In which case Pm was left, meshes credited, and if any controversy arose in the future they would be pulled with no hesitation and no questions asked.
---

So Terra... This might be a bad time to ask, but would you consider my request I posted about your K'T'Kara?
I only DL'ed it the day it was posted, I haven't even unpacked it... (points to menagerie of files I compulsively DL even if I never touch them, meh I need to save up for another 300gb external drive, I got like 40 mb left...)

No or no answer means I delete it next time I trim the HD inventory :'(

What?
You don't have a CD\DVD burner to back them up to?
What about gettting a memeory stick, or a external backup drive?
Most of these storage solution you can get for well under 100 USD and don't require you opening the case to modify your PC.

Newegg just had a deal: 400 gig for $80 - doubt its still up, but newegg is still the best place to get great deals.

Well I run XP so i don't know if that or my old rig that WON'T recognise my 300gb internal, it says I have like 127gb... I bought a 300gb external it recognises. 400gb for $80.00? might need to wait for the next comp show I can only pay cash (no CC anymore).

My priority right now is to scape by and possibly by Christmas get a decent rig. I can't play any of the newer games, mainly cause I need shader 2.0+ tech and that is on PCI-E cards. My rig probably can't take that kind of motherboard anyway so might as well get a whole new rig. I've had this comp for like 5 years

p4 1.8ghz
768mb DDR ram
generic 256mb ATI (like a 9025?)

My previous comp was:
a PII 400
256mb pc100
ATI 32mb All-In-Wonder

Oh and my DVD/CD rw stopped working right long ago. They run but never correctly make discs (tried diff brands). I was thinking of getting an external one but other stuff take priorities. I'm working all the overtime I can get just to cover some RL expenses... Let's just say I thought I was middle class 10 years ago, turns out I've been working poor the whole time.  ;D

Oh dude I feel your pain.

My last rig (maybe 4 months ago) was this:
800 MHz p3
256 MB ram
Onboard Vid
Nvidia MX 4000 (PCI) vid card
40 GB HD

This Rig (again, 4 months old)
2.2 GHz AMD Athlon 64
2GB ram
Onboard GeForce 6100 nForce 405
GeForce 6200 LE
(and i took the Nvidia 4000 MX from the old rig; yes, im running 3 vidcards)
HD 1: 160 GB (20 Gigs left)
HD 2: 400 GB

take out the 400 GB, add in the case and power supply it cost me about $400. (invoice says $371, but i had to get a fan and other stuff). I already had a DVD burner and all that stuff.
The old rig still works - I use it as my TV (watch DVDs on it).
I like me a newegg ^_^.

Then do the next thing that will not cost a dime.

Ask in the forum if anyone will give you space to store things on. I use to store things on Mackies site when I needed space and did not want to permanetily lose items. Most ppl here could probably give you some space.

I did not know that. (when MP gave me the badge for my siggy I figured it was as an associate member).
I didnl;t know I had like benefits!  ;D

Regardless, I'll just prep stuff for finishing and use my usual site for storage. Lack of activity in 30 days and they go away. That's usually good enough for me.

Quick easy, no limits, no registration, and no stupid verification stuff (i think)..

Terra, Not releasing to the public makes sense to me. You can always still release to other modelers you trust. Releasing to the general public will always lead to misuse because there will always be 1 or 2%  that will do whatever they want with no regard for protocol. People that do that will never change either, they are what they are.

What I found disappointing, was an original design I did was done by someone else. That area is a bit grey as well. Its one thing to redesign a Canon ST ship because that goes on every day and everyone knows who the rights for the ST based design belong to. But when someone else comes up with a ship that looks 90% similar to your non ST original design, only maybe they drop the back wings, then thats a bit unnerving.

I stepped back and took a look at how to proceed and came to the conclusion that as this was only one of my hobbies. It just isn't worth the frustration of displaying my work in these types of forums, where all it takes is 1 or 2 people to disrupt things. Also since no money is involved it does not make any sense to spend too much time or resources trying to police things.

The bright side for me is I was able to take about 10% of the skills I learned in this forum and transfer that into a business that is not related to ship modeling in any way. Amazingly I, who was once a modeling junkie, have found there are other things in life that are more rewarding.

Terra, wish you luck in what ever you decide. Don't rule out never releaseing again though, sometimes just a break is good enough but everyone has to determine when enough is enough.
Regards,
James aka red_green    - ship_rods -Model_Peon   and general nut case at times but as long as I cause a few morons some grief I'll be doing some good  ;)

Hey RG, that should not have discouraged you.

Look at the telephone. Independently made on opposite sides of the Globe, we remember BELL cause he got the patent first.
Same for models, it happens...  :D
