SFC3 on the Big Screen
« on: July 14, 2007, 01:08:43 pm »
I'm not sure if you're aware of Borg War, a fan film that used SFC3 to generate most of the spaceflight SFX.  Well, it's going to be featured at the giant Star Trek convention in Las Vegas this year.  So lots of ST fans will be seeing SFC3, some of them probably for the first time (hee, hee).  Anyway, here's the announcement on the convention webpage:

Wish me luck!  I'm going to be there to introduce the film -- and to catch any rotten tomatoes that get thrown my way.

See what you can do to drum up demand for an SFC4.  Use the sympathetic card.
The pen is truly mightier than the sword.  And considerably easier to write with.

What???!!!  You mean Legacy wasn't good enough for you???!!!!    ;)

SFC4...  I only wish.  Don't hold your breath.  It's really ironic, in my view, that the game industry doesn't "get" that there a limited number of computer game designs.  The SFC model (which is used in a couple of sailing ship simulations, too) is very different from the RPG, RTS or MMO model.   The idea that you start with something that's at full power -- and then become weaker as you fight -- is very different than the constant build up of power (and quick healing) that's in every other game.  SFC-type games force you to think the combat out and plan ahead.  They're games that require intelligence and prudence to play well.

I still play SFC3 and SFC/OP frequently, because they're just plain well-designed games.

By the way, Eric Bethke has been extremely encouraging about Borg War, as has Danny Pelfrey, who did the music.

Incidently, CBS/Paramount now owns the code to SFC3.  Maybe they could be convinced to release it to public domain and let some of us mess around with it.  Interesting thought.

I wanted to mention that I will be at the screening to answer questions about how the movie was made and how I got CBS/Paramount to approve the screening.  Please feel free to stop by and introduce yourself! :)
