Monitor Dead
« on: July 09, 2007, 10:07:49 am »
Well, after 3 years of very light use, the 19" CRT I had my powermac set up to seems to have died.  I have no idea what happened, I was using the computer last night, turned around and the monitor was dead- no power whatsoever.  I doubt I can fix it, or that it would even be worth fixing.
SO, I need a new monitor.  I'm thinking LCD this time and thought I would ask for some recommendations.  I will be using this for some web viewing, maybe some you tube vids, definitely NOT heavy gaming or anything like that.  I would like a nice crisp picture, though.  I was on newegg.com, and they had some 19" widescreens for less than $200, but I wasn't sure if they were worth buying.
What say ye all?

I told you that my monitor was dying?  I shouldn't have, it was working perfectly up until last night, then, poof, no power at all.  That monitor doesn't seem like that bad of a deal, but I was comparing it to this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009100

It's cheaper, with a faster response time.  I've been looking n new egg at what seem to be good prices, so I'm naturally asking "what's the catch?"

Yeah Bro you did. You wanted me to ask about this pixel problem you was having, and the last time it happened the monitor died on you and Apple replaced it. That may have been a differant system though, Come to think of it, I believe it was a note book.

Hell  I don't know man, I get a lot of calls , and I may have mistaken you on this one.

No, you're right, I told you about an issue I'm having with my laptop, this monitor that died all of a sudden was different.  THe notebook will keep working, I'm sure, but the monitor thing will get worse on that over time.  Annoying really.  Wish I knew why it kept happening.

I'll keep looking into that, But responce has been very slow bro. Any way, Hannible Rising is coming on, Talk to you in a few bro.

I would seriously suggest this monitor

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824116375

I got it after a lot of research... I am NOT a fan of widescreen monitors tho so take that into account but I am serious when i say that this monitor is the best I've ever used. Rich, crisp colors, even backlight (which was surprising since most LCDs I've seen have poor backlighting which is plainly visable but this only has some at the lower and upper edges) it also has the response time it advertises since I have no ghosting or any of those problems in games while many other LCD refresh times are optimistic at best. This is an old model LCD but Viewsonic keeps selling it and it keeps selling well because they got almost everything right with this monitor.

Also it has a mail in rebate.

Looks nice, but I had hoped to keep this purchase under $200 if possible

This might be what you are looking for:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000OK1046/interactiveda656-20

I've had my eye on the 22" version for a little while now and plan on getting it as soon as I have the cash.  I've seen the monitor (22") in the stores around here and it looks very nice.  Don't think you can go wrong with this one.  Hope this helps.

Strongly recommend the Viewsonic 19" models. Got one last year (VA1912wb) just sub $200, only problem is the driver (known isue with this brand) but generic XP driver works fine.

1680x1050 is even better!

But mine is on a laptop so not helpful for this conversation.

I prefer 2048 x 1536 though for the Dynaverse forums I use 1600 x 1200.   Otherwise I might click on delete message rather than reply as the icons get really tiny

I always use native resolution on my LCD which is 1280x1020. If I want better graphics I use anti-aliasing. Again I'm not a fan of widescreen, they say it is more 'natural' but having grown up and watched 4:3 all my life widescreen just never seems to look good for a computer screen. I mean its fine for movies and all but for documents especially and games somewhat it just doesn't do it for me.

I can tell you this- the 17" widescreen on my dell laptop is a real asset for spreadsheets and database type software.  For average use, though, it doesn't really matter to me.

Well, I finally came to a decision- Best buy had an Acer 19" widescreen on sale this week for $139.99 (5ms, 700:1 contrast ratio)  This seemed like a decent deal, and so far I really like it.

Naw, the vid card on that computer only handles one monitor.  Of course, the sale goes until sunday...  Dunno if it's the same deal at best buys elsewhere in the US.  That's twice now I've gotten deals at BB- the last one was I got a 120 GB USB powered external HD (5400 rpm) for $70, but I also managed to get another $20 off, so I paid just over $50 for it.
