New Map Idea
« on: July 17, 2007, 07:10:15 pm »
Well sorta..this has probably been done before, but I don't remember it so I'm claiming it..

- Only hexes worth VP are "owned" by the Empires. (In this case cal it ISC/Fed)
- Any hex may be attacked (might have a "range" form a friendly hex, mightl change)
- All hexes "control" a one hex border around them
- Hexes would only count for VP purposes if you can draw a straight(ish) line from them to another of your hexes without having the line intersect
  with an enemy controlled hex
EX- on the map above, if the Feds took hex 4, the ISC would not benefit from any VP generated by hex 5, because a straigh(ish) line to the nearest ISC hex
would run through hex 4. now controlled by the Federation
The ISC could take hex B, but would gain no VP from it until they took hex A or G (or F & C, or E & C)

Neutral hexes would have farly high DVs (likely 30-50) but could-with enough time be flipped to your Empire, where you could then place a base
to interdict or strengthen and enemy/friendly supply line.
EX- If the ISC took hex E or F , they would be able to place a base where the big scraggly X is, the Feds would then have no LOS and gain no VP's for
hex D (if the ISC took hex E) or the Feds would gain no VP's for hexes D or E (if the ISC took hex F)

This concept would
A) Concentrate (to a degree) PVP targets, hexes would take a while to flip, and with there being no real point to flipping neutral space players would likely tend to stick around the target hexes
B) Actually (maybe?) bring some illusion of strategic blindness into the game, you wouldn't be able to simply watch the news like
Feds take hex 17,20
Feds take hex 17,21
Feds take hex 17,22
And wonder if they're trying for the base at 17,23
C)(maybe) give bases a strategic reason to be placed,

Sounds like you want to turn off mandatory play in neutral hexes.

Either way.
The idea was yes- get rid of mandatories in neutral for a more free wheeling campaign, with strikes essentially able to come out of nowhere,
But some seem to like the mandatories, so you could leave them in if you want, (I'm still not entirely sure why they want mandatories but..)

Unless it messes up some internal thing, or proves compeltely unworkable for some as of yet I've not seen it reason I think any campaign
I run <snicker> will use no mandatories in neutral.

I'm hoping it would make strategy a little more interesting.

Hexx I know its hard for you to reach your computer (even thought its a laptop and its on the floor) but how about this put your ideas into a server and play test it if it works great and if it doesn't you know what is not working and you can fix it :o

How bout this,
Since early era tends to be hex flippers more than PvP why not build your Empire first .
Keep 63-68 or so a treaty time for exploring, and taking neutral hexes only. You want to attack and have PvP in this period? This can only be done in scout ship  1v1s only as these ships do not fly with wings. The object being here is that you need economy to wage war.By end of treaty if your empire hasn't reached a certain econ number, it isn't able to afford to wage war to attack enemy space until said econ number is reached. If the number is reached before end of treaty give a couple more heavy metal points to use for rest of server. To keep the nutters from stacking hexes at your doorstep keep a buffer zone around HW hexes (eg.the area needed to be able to match econ for war as solid color around HW).Each team starts with a cluster of seven hexes throw a few empire hexes here and there for VCs.Each team starts with VCs(the allied scattered ones) and is added or subtracted from starting total as campain progresses.
I grant you your soul, but not your life.
Be happy that I have found a measure of mercy.
