Some of us have only now seen your work...but some of us are also puttering along on 12.0 k dial-up connections, desperately awaiting the day the wireless guy gets his truck out of the muddy yard he buried it in and comes to my house, and thus, try to avoid image-heavy threads.

Still, though...for you...I looked at 'em. Quite nice, thus far. Very SotSF.

Ah-hummm... Yeah...

Well...for this particular 'kitbash', I never liked it. Though your version minus the third nacell, and more importantly, the goofy looking stretched Conny pylons, does make the ship look much better. Now, I can see why one might design it with the repitition of the 'upper' saucer on the 'bottom'. But why two bridge modules? Seems that a sensor module like to other, more normal ships would look better and make more sense.

Just my thoughts, though I repeat that I do like the over-all look of the version without the extra engine.

Thanks Guv! I happen to agree with you totally there. I was originally going to have the NX Scorpio be underpowered and needing the third nacelle added to it for the NCC model, but after I chopped off that damn third nacelle for the screen shots, I found that I loved the twin nacelle version a whole lot! So, since this ship was never seen on screen and just a study model built for wreckage in the Dominion War, I decided to make the class in production with only 2 nacelles. The third was only added for the Dominion War.

As for the second bridge on the underside (and no torpedo tubes), that is, unfortunately the way the model was built, and I'm trying to faithfully duplicate that look. However, there is precedence, you know. Just look again at the underside of the Constellation class.

The bridge module may have been replaced by a standard - if back-to-front - sensor array, but the observation deck segment is still there.

I was thinking of adding on an Excelsior sensor array to the underside of the Scorpio, but... well, I know it would look better, but it would be wrong.

Though I am considering adding in two forward photon tubes to the upper saucer rim, like the photon tubes faired into the Excelsior's secondary hull. I'll play around with her a little more.

Does the class history strike you as sensible?

As far as Constellation goes, it depends on whose model you're lookin' at. The lil' micromachine I have just duplicates the bridge module and observation deck hub. The drawing in the Encyclopedia shows something similar to the 'observation' deck, but it's boxier. There have been many interpretations of the Constellation, including my favorite, which is draw with 4 forward photon tubes! [between each set of nacelles.] I've also seen fan built models that just use an exact copy of the ob-deck with a sensor array on it. There are few shots in TNG that show the bottom side on any of the Stargazer-type ships. It's one of my favorite designs.

As far as the design history goes, I'm a poor judge. I'll give it another read and give you my opinion later...

The arrangement of the third engine and the pylons for it don't make sense in my mind, possibly location, possibly function. It does not make sense to me to route so much more drive plasma conduits forward to get to the third when the other two are aft. It seems more likely that the third would be mounted in some fashion closer to the other two, including the pylons. Now, on kinda the same lines, with two pylons would there be two plasma conduits, say one as a main and the other as a backup, or both functional all the time? Again, from a design POV it seems kinda like wasted materials. It seems more likely that one would be functional and the other have no conduit at all, however this might interfere with the overall ship's symmetry internally. I would think that it would be mounted on a single pylon just below where the other two come together, thus supplying the engine from one source.

Now, if you were to add another one, bringing the total to four, then of course two pylons makes sense.

As to the bridge/sensor/lightbulb/whatever you want it to be on the bottom... Perhaps a captain's Yacht?

Czar "Lookin good" Mohab, who enjoyed both variants visually, but doesn't like that third engine mechanically.

*EDIT* I realize its almost canon... I just don't see that third engine mounted like that as proper.

Oh, I agree completely, Guv. Let me show you the model I'm using:

This is the actual studio model of the USS Hathaway, redressed for exhibition as the USS Valkyrie. In the picture below you can still see her old name under 'Valkyrie":

So, in the blue box of the pic below we have the original officers' lounge construction, but with the bridge module replaced with be back-to-front tactical sensor array.

Now, the fun part is in the red box! Here's another angle below, but less clear:

Now, doesn't the contents of those red and white boxes look like a resin cast of a Constitution photon deck to you, top and bottom?

It may not be lit up like a photon tube in the eps, but that's the part it was made from. And since the exhaust ports of the twin impulse engines also weren't lit up during the eps but are clearly Constitution/Miranda impulse engines...

My Connie has two photon decks for 4 forward tubes. (I originally gave her two Excelsior-style "hidden" photon tubes at the front of the saucer, but these pics and the cutaway from the Star Trek Magazine dismiss the need of them.

On another note, I have done some non-canon pics of the "original" Scorpio with a proper sensor array (see below), but I really like Mohab's suggestion that it is a faired-in captain's yacht.

I also did a version of this with some photon tubes, but it's not canon, and I actually think the photon bridge spoils her sleek looks. Tell me what you think:

I was gonna post the modified pic I have from a Trek calendar [Ships of the Line] that shows those torpedo tubes quite nicely. And yes, I also have pics of the Valkyrie. Yours are from better angles though and show it more clearly.
The repitition of the ob-deck doesn't bother me. The repitition of the bridge does. I'd go for a yaght plug in just as easily as a sensor pallet. The reuse of the bridge just seems rather hodge-podge to me, as though the ship were not a real class, but rather built from floating space junk after a mojor battle.

Your design of the ship minus the third engine is great. I like the way it looks, and agree whole-heartedly with Mohab about the pylons and the third engine. Though I do like the version you just dropped with the Reliant torpedo rack and rollbar. I always like ships that tastefully include that.

My vote remains with #2 and would also be included fot the torpedo armed variant were it up for votes.

Actually, if you had the inverted photon rollbar hanging from the nacelle pylons instead of the saucer, she would retain her sleekness while gaining a sense of symmetry.

Or, if you don't want a rollbar at all, cut into the saucer a bit and stick the photon tubes there, Akiyazi style.

Thanks for the suggestion, Maxillius! I have to say that I'm not overly fond of the saucer photon cutout - unless it is done really well, like in the case of the Akyazi class. Doing it to this ship would be... messy.

I think it would spoil the ship's lines even more, though I could be wrong. I was thinking of putting in a texture to show some "faired in" torpedo tubes like the Excelsior has in her secondary hull, but I'm not sure about that. We'll see.

Putting the weapons bridge on the nacelle pylons is interesting, though...

It involved some retcon renaming for a ship on my website, but to avoid confusion with the Jackill or Ships of the Star Fleet Amerind-class, I've renamed mind the Trista-class.

Here's an idea for your Akyazi-Style torpedo saucer-divot: make the indentation on just one side, top or bottom. The opposite saucer segment retains the original lines and the torp tubes still get their recess.

Not sure where the idea came from. But kinda sounds good. I'd have to see it done to really know...

That's kinda what I was thinking. I'd put the tubes on the bottom saucer edge, and since they're Excelsior saucers, they're *much* bigger than the Akiyazi, so maybe you don't need to cut anything at all. Just stick them on the bottom of the leading edge.

Hmm... I am intrigued by this idea, Guv. I'd cut them out of the top saucer, though, since it is the bottom saucer that has the RCS thrusters.

If I knew how to cut a section out of a shape at all, that is.

Not much into this modding thing myself, but it seems as if you might be able to make a small indent on the main shape where you want the tubes to go, perhaps zoom in to get the details of the hole just right, and then reapply the skin, and where the holes/tubes/divots/whatevers are, add the new tube skin. Like I said, I'm no modder, it just feels like that is what I would do if I were one.

Kinda like the 'photon recess' idea too. Reminds me of how some WWII era planes had the guns slung under the nose.
