How to change servers
« on: July 08, 2007, 01:37:15 pm »
K people seem to keep insatlling/uninsatlling stuff for differnt servers and somehow some of them are getting the game messed up.
You don't have to do this.
There isn't any real need or benefit to doing continous fresh installs, and obvioulsy there can be some issues caused by doing it..

All you need to do to switch between most servers is..

1) Change the shiplist.txt file
2) Change the ftrlist.txt file

and MAYBE
3) change the model.siz file
4) change some script files (doubtful- but I suppose posssible)

HOW to change said files
First you have to know where your OP directory is- this is wherever you've installed the game.

In my case it's
 E:/games/OP2

both shiplist.txt and ftrlist.txt are located in the OP subdirectory \assets\specs
That means you need to go into your OP directory (where the game is) and find a folder called "Assets"

In my case E:/games/OP2/Assets

In that folder there is another folder called "Specs"

In my case E:/games/OP2/Assets/Specs

Open "specs" there are a number of files
here you'll have one called shiplist.txt and one called ftrlist.txt

for 90% of the servers that's all you need to change.
You can even leave the original files in thsi directory when you install new ones.
All you have to do is rename the files.

EX- I have my original (from a new install) fighter and shiplists simply called 1shiplist.txt and 1ftrlist.txt
I can then install the AOTK3 files, when I don't want to play AOTK3 anymore I can simply rename (or delete) the
shiplist and ftrlist.txt files (I use AOTK3shiplist.txt and AOTK3ftrlist.txt) and rename the 1shiplist.txt and 1ftrlist.txt
to shiplist.txt and fighterlist.txt and I can log into the forge.

Easy

No uninstall/reinstall needed.

So there isn't a need for installer packages anymore? Just a link to said files, download and put into the proper areas?
Don't get me wrong, I like installer packages. I just don't understand why they work for some servers and not for others.
Using installer packages that don't have a working uninstall function (or only partially works) invites problems down the road for less experienced users not unlike myself.

Now that I know, I will try your method in the future Hexx. Thanks  ;)

Haha cute.
Here I am trying to help people who've been cruely hurt by your installer and you'd rather them wipe everything out and install the whole thing again..for shame
Especially considering that it's not working for everyone.
Guess some of us just care more about the community than others....

@Kaz
All installer packages do is install the files you need. (uhmm obviously)
Now- some of them will installl extra model folders and stuff (this is how andros, different monsters and stuff appear on some servers), and most will install extra missions (which is what people are referring to when they talk about scripts)
So installers are good

It's when you UNINSTALL that all you have to do (usually) is reinstall the shiplists as I mentioned- the extra model folders (if any) and missions (if any) don't do anything.
You could have a thousand extra model folders-  the game only cares about having model folders that the current shiplist and ftrlist point to. As long as those folders are there it doesn't care about any other folders you might have.

(Again using myself as an example)
Everytime there's a new server I play on I DL and run the installer.
If it's DH's it usually frops the fles in the games default directory (this is like C;/program files/taldren blah blah blah)
From there I just grab the shiplist, ftrlist, and any missions they have and drop them in the right places for my game to work.
Whe I want to uninstall I just flip the ship and ftrlists back as I mentioned before.

All you need to do to "remove" the AOTK3 crap is re-install OP+ 4 over it.  That's it.

Which I agree should be working, but doesn't seem to be working for everyone.
So just flip the ftr and shiplist.

easy.
