I continue to be astounded by the number of players who sign up, download shiplist, missions, etc for a campaign and never even glance at the rules.
Being a "n00b" is not an excuse...There is NO excuse for not at least giving the rules a quick read to have a basic knowledge of them.
Even Veteran players are sometimes guilty of this. And there's even less of an excuse for them.
I was told by a player on ATOK, after trying to explain his multiple rule infractions, "Rules are stupid, they ruin the fun of this game".
Then he continued what he was doing.
And then he wondered why his account was stripped of PP and he was put in a Police ship.
Maybe if that was done more often for continued rule infractions, they start paying attention to them more.
Campaign after campaign I try to be patient and spend vast amounts of time explaining rules, etc to players on both sides.
Damn, but I get tired of that sometimes.
Everything in life has rules, the D2 is not different.
Maybe we should have like a EULA thing at the bottom of the rules page, where you have to check a box stating you have read and understand the rules and agree to follow them. Only then would the link for the campaign installer show.
Players who have to be continually corrected or have to be told about the rule of such-and-such every other day really wear on other's enjoyment and bring about the attitude "Well, they do it all the time, why shouldn't we?". Before you know it, both sides are pissed off at the other andf the players population fades away.
Admins, SCs, and RMs spend vast amounts of time devoted to typing campaign guidelines, OPs, planning, etc. and it VERY frustrating to have 90% of that work ignored by players because they don't want to spend 5 minutes reading the rules page or forums (OK, 20 minutes if it's one of Dizzy's servers
).
And then pilots wonder why sometimes I'm a little crisp and give them the answer "I posted it in the forums already..." rather than explaining it for the hundredth time because they were too damned lazy to read for a few minutes.
IMOHPO, it is every players responsibility to be aware of the rules for each campaign and to follow them. It is not up to the SC or RMs to make sure every knows them, they already have their hands full with OPs, planning, forums and all the other things that go along with the job.
That's My View...
