Ticonderoga Class X Light Cruiser

The Ticonderoga Class Light Cruiser is the newest class of vessels to come from the Federation assembly line.
At present, only the Ticonderoga has been completed, with the construction of 24 more vessels to begin if and when she successfully completes her trials.
The Ticonderoga is the first Starfleet vessel with up and down warp nacelles, as opposed to the conventional side to side method of dual engines in the past.
Great study and design experimentation has gone into this alignment, with a number of new theories in warp engineering occurring as well.
Not until the evidence of improved performance came about was this radical design ever seriously considered.
Tests have shown that through some still not understood principle of warp matter/antimatter balance a vessel using this engine configuration should attain greater speeds with more safety than a vessel using the standard configuration.
Practical trials have only been conducted with vessels less than 40,000 tons but designers and warp engineers can find no reason why this advantage should not help larger ships as well.
Ticonderoga has been built to make sure that this is indeed so.
If the class is a success, Starfleet intends to use the vessels for such tasks as escorts for important convoys, and pirate suppression.
Finally, the privateers who prey on helpless shipping will come up against a vessel that can both outgun them and outrun them.
This never-before-seen situation is looked upon with great expectation by many merchant corporations and far-flung frontier worlds.
The trials of the Ticonderoga are scheduled for later in this year.
Only then will it be known for sure if the class will be a success or not.
Regardless of the outcome, the Ticonderoga class may very well be the last major Starfleet vessel to be equipped with standard warp engines.
The continuing tests of the new battleship Excelsior and her transwarp drive may make all other means of interstellar propulsion obsolete before the final ship of the Ticonderoga class is complete.

Nice job.

Sweet design but god I hope nothing happens to cause that upper nacelle to explode, it'd likely rip the entire bridge module apart.

 ;D Nicely done model there.

One more off the FASA trek to SFC list....

I would be interested to know what pre-1983/4 references were available for the SFB TOS style Akula FDD.

I loved the name Ticonderoga for a TMP Connie not as a FASA mauled Akula.

Are you referring to the Akyazi Subclass , the Akula from the reference manuals or Fandom design with the over and under nacelles? ?

Reference Manual Design
SEE ATTACHED PIC
Akula Class of starship operated by Starfleet for over 40 years between the 2240s and the 2280s. Akula class starships are broadly similar to the Constitution class, but with their warp nacelles positioned alongside the engineering hull. The class underwent a major refit programme in the 2270s. Named after a class of Russian attack submarine, itself named for the Russian for 'shark', and the LG class starship. ["Nick of Time"(SO), "Death Stalks These Halls" (SO)]

MP, I was referring to this TOS Akula:

Image is from K'tHyla's Phoenix Experimental Shipyards.

If you twist the TOS nacelles aroun on the above Akula you can get  a FASA Style TOS version of the Ticonderoga.

I love the PA Akula and have it as my FDX. However, I don't recall if the FASA Trek writers knew about Gunthuer's PA Akula at the time the FASA Trek was published.

I believe that design from K'tHyla's Phoenix Experimental Shipyards is the fanboy one. I don't know of any information on it. It looks like a TMP version of the TOS Buran Class.

Buran class:
Type of Starfleet starship. The Buran class was an experimental design of the 2220s which arranged the vessels pair of warp nacelles vertically rather than horizontally. The ship's design was basically that of a saucer-section with thick pylons above and below the rear with the nacelles attached. The design proved to be sound and was later replaced with the Discovery class in the 2290s and led to the Challenger class in the 2350s. Only eight ships of the class were developed and were used as survey vessels following up on work by the main exploration ships.

As for the FASA Style TOS version of the Ticonderoga I'd love to see a picture of it if ya have or find one.

Jack Hill's Reference Manual states
NCC-2034   Ticonderoga II [Excelsior class]

And the only canon info I know of for the Ticonderoga is this...........

Name: U.S.S. Ticonderoga NCC- ?
Class: ?

- Reported to the Ba'ku homeworld in 2375 to facilitate the planet becoming a Federation protectorate.
- Named to honor the capture of Fort Ticonderoga on May 10, 1775, by Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys.
Source: "Star Trek: Insurrection"

Based on the TMP FASA design (even though it was never stated) my guess is the TNG Ticonderoga is a Challenger-class starship
even though it could very easily be the afore mentioned Excelsior class vessel given the longevity of the design.
