AOTK4: The "Strange Trip" Home . . .
« on: July 03, 2007, 06:14:00 pm »
Admittedly, this was one for the flippers but I think with the exception of some shiplist bugs and a few minor rules changes, I'd do this again 95% intact.

Though I liked the 3-sided nature of AOTK1 and AOTK2, we just don't have the population anymore to run a 3-sided war.

Just looking for some feedback . . .

Well everyone (except those of us repeatedly denied the huge prestige amounts we were promised for doing nothing) seemed to like the server.

Do try and find something new to add some spice to it though ~ Maybe some kinda temporal anomaly, start out with the X ships and work your way back to the junk
Wow- sometimes I amaze even myself!

I would not mind seeing another one, just not right away.

Would need a new twist, as Hexx said.  Even his idea isn't bad :o( cant beleive I just typed that)

That is retarted, beside the Drones would STILL get faster and you can't prevent somebody from not dying and staying in a late-era ship the entire server

Change all the drone racks into plasmas and the plasmas into drone ranks.  That would be VERY interesting.  *shudders at the thought of a B11K with R-Torps*

Could be that
Or it could be someone's simply too lazy to redo every YFA/YLA in the list....

Hmmm .... picture a Mad Max type scenario here ...  the server starts in late era, and the YFAs start phasing out the late ships and reintroducing older crappier ones ... fast drones are still around but you hike the price of them every year as they get harder and harder to find ... bonus VCs and PvP points for killing left over ships from the heady days of yesteryear ("the last of the V8s...")

It'd be a pain in the butt for whatever sucker (DH  ::) ) ran it, but might have potential

Mad Max- Brilliant!Exactly what I was trying to convey.
Now why didn't i think of that...!

Anyway you (obviously) would have to do something- I mean a D6D or any droner that's chucking 6 fast drones at the old boats would have just a wee advantage,
and there'd have to be some rule about stashing good ships in accounts to pull out later (can the admin chaeck that kinda stuff?)
But it might be kinda cool to have a Cb being hunted down by lesser ships.

Perhaps, due to the lack of adequate maintenance facilities, have a ship lose 10% of its warp capabilities each year after its YLA.  This would be pretty easy to add as an editor feature, then just run a sweep during the DB cleans.

Then you wouldn't have to worry about adminning it at all, the players themselves would ditch the ship sometime before it became useless, and if they didn't then they'd be sitting ducks when they tried to drag it out of an obscure account.

You can run an editor to effect the server shiplist? This won't mess anything up?

Oh the possibilites...  :o

Actually, it would be editing the players' warp engine values in the ship blobs in the server .sds files

Ah the beauty of scripting languages - automation does it in about 10 minutes.

I've got the AOTK3 shiplist and ftrlist with reversed timelines set up, based on the assumption that the server starts in 2285 - the beginning of the end ;D

It goes in exact reverse order, so if a ship was phased out 10 years before 2285 it will now become available in 2295, if it used to have a YFA of 2265 then its new YLA is 2305, etc.

I'll post 'em when I get home tonight.

As the awesome powers of Hexx have revealed, this is farrrrrr too intricate and requires far too much thought to do simply.

<dave puts completed files in the fridge to let them age  ;D >

PS - BTW: sorry DH, will stop hijacking this thread, and move this stuff over to a madmax thread in the admins forum

WHOAH!
Hold on here

See I know you're kinda new at this so this is how it goes

1) Have (and post) about brilliant new server concept
2) Modify/stretch and redefine parameters of said new server numerous times
3) Post numerous time on the brilliance of said server, point out to plebeian masses how *this* server will seamlessly integrate PVP/Strategic and tactical planning/hex flipping/
reinforcements/battles involving more than 6 players/functional shipyards with raids of said yards actually having an effect on the production values etc
4) Get distracted by some bright shiny NEW object and move on.

Can't have everyone getting the stuff done and throwing it at me or people will start to expect stuff.

I would love to see a server based on RDSL (Revenge of Dr. StrangeLove). That whole concept with the secrets unlocking
tech was awesome. The ship models used in that were great too. ;D

I basically loved this server for 1 main reason: It was very different from anything we have done (in my opinion) to date.
Almost everything about it was fresh, new and exciting. With the new mission scripts, I believe this type of server has extreme potential. :)

PS: Don't know if I'm really down with the reverse timeline theory. The idea of going from cool to crappy doesnt get the blood pumping. I'll have to side with DH on this one. Sorry :-\

[Warning - dave is bored and typing again]

Ever considered an "everyone gets everything" server?  All the left handed beings in the galaxy (Coalition of course) band together against all the right handed beings (or whatever justification you come up with).

Anyway, both sides would get the "useful" ships from all 8 races, and see who can make the best use of them?

If everyone gets everything, mise well have an ISC invasion server. Ally everyone cept the ISC and the Orion 9th race. Ally the latter two and replace the AI Orion Race with ISC ships so AI drafting allies work for them. As each empire falls to the ISC, use the tension editor in the DB to change that race to ally with the ISC till they pwn everyone. Mb by then we will have some working Andromedans and finish blowing up the rest of the Alpha Quadrant. During this we can run the Mad Max server because tech gets whacked from so much war and we lose it and have to start flying obsolete ships. Then Dr. Strangelove comes along with our missing tech and through a series of achievements and the discovery of mysterious secrets, we unlock our tech once again in the Secrets of Dr. StrangeLove server.
Then in the next server the slave girls get a hold of the last dilithium crystal planet and hold the galaxy ransom, but amazingly we discover that dilithium actually turns out to be Endurium and we then set off to find a black egg device and blow up the crystal planet to save arth from the solar flares and we run into the Uhlek which makes the Andro's look like freighter panzies. I'll have more later...

How about an isc civil war server some think like two factions starting across the map getting one allie each like the mirak for one and the klingons for the other. They would  have the same sl with some minor changes because of the difference in tech of their two allies. Just a thought.

This is a good idea too. In fact, we should do civil wars for all ther races. Fed and Kling are already done.
Imagine a Hydran civil war.... lol

Each side could get one ship that they can customize to anything they want to within reason.  Make some super-dooper K-C7 variant loaded with photons and dizzies and stuff. Or, a I-CCZ that is one turn mode better that it currently is, etc.

Have a server rule that each side can only field one of these "cutomized" legendary ships on the dyna at anytime.

Take it a step further, give each side a pool of weapons and let them design their ships.  For instance, the Alliance forces get their weapons, the coalition theirs, then you have a server with two sides, say Fed and Klink, with those new ships with wacky weapons systems on them.  Might be a comical change at least.
