UFOP Jupiter class Battleship wip......
« on: July 03, 2007, 04:02:49 pm »
Here is the Jupiter. She sits somewhere around a Galaxy in size, no sep, but has moving nacelles. I might redo the nacelles, but here is how she looks for the moment.

Somehow I'm struck with the notion that this is what the Titan should have looked like...

It's got the right sovergin parts to indicate a new line of design (based on the sov), a nice round saucer (always liked those), and the nacelle construction tells of a new nacelle configuration. More!

Somehow I think the midship body line which is created by the pylons should extend in some capacity all the way to the bow. Those nacelles leave alot to be desired, I don't care what famous trek person thinks they're cool (I'm not naming him so don't ask...suckers ;D ) I do love the round saucer, a perfectly or nearly so round suacer is a striking design feature that stands out on many designs.

I like that ship.

i taught it was a tos battleship, but this tng ship is good  :D

i think the saucer should be 1/4 to 1/3 smaller compare to the rest of the ship, but beside that its a good ship  :BoeseSmilies (71):

For some odd reason, when it comes to over sized hulls, I seem to prefer over sized saucers that are completely round, rather than oval ones.

I'm probably alone in my opinion *shrugs*

nah, a small saucer would look silly anyways. And oval saucers would just make it a galaxy rip off, or a wannabe excalibur or sov.

hmm... A quick run through the Starship schematic database's canon section seems to show that perfectly round saucers were phased out for ellipses or imperfect circles (akira). the only exception seems to be the Ambassador class.

Well, starfleets trend toward larger ships seems to have reversed too, as the sov despite being longer has considerably less internal volume and mass as compared to the galaxy, and ofcourse the intrepid, akira, defiant, saber and other such classes that have cropped up since then, so perhaps round saucers are making a comeback.

Well, my feds pretty much suck......thats the short and long of it. So, with some help from some freinds (they tend to be more traditional in thier designs) I made up the current designs I have up for show. This ship did have an even larger saucer originally, and it was perfectly round, but it was downsized a bit, inverse added on the top of the saucer, and scrunched just a nudge across its width. This created a more flowing design overall when linked with the hull.

NICE! NICE!

As for the nacelles, simply increase their forward length.

I was thinking about doing that......or maybe reducing the nacelles overall size, to give them a more "Intrepid" like proportion.

Ok, since im unsure which way you mean, ill post a pic of both possibilities.

Do you mean A or B? A has the nacelle fronts stretched to half of the distance between the edge of the nacelle struts and the saucer edge. B has the nacelles actually moved up to be the same distance. Let me know which one looks better to you guys.

Raven - please forgive my audacity at suggesting you change the design for the Leopard, Ares and Jupiter. But I think that if you used the nacelles you designed for the Falcon on all of them (with minor changes to fit in with their particular design/textures) you'd have one awesome little fleet.

BTW - from several other posts, I've noticed you don't seem to be proud of your Fed designs. I've downloaded every Klink and Rommie ship you've released and played them with pleasure. Often I'll just load them up in the modviewer and admire the art. These designs rival any of the aliens you've done! Thanks for all the hard work. I can't wait for the DL on these.

I think the nacelle below would look great on them all and it would also unify the designs with a uniquely Raven fed-tech look.

Thanks for the compliment. I think its important for all artists to be very hard on thier work. I have a long way to go before I am satisfied with my feds, but I'm starting to like the improvement.

As to the nacelles, I could do small varients of the "sneaker" nacelle I designed....what I probably should have done in the first place was designed a whole slew of nacelles, and then see if any fit that particular design.

Should I do some modifications on the nacelle if I put them on the Leopard? I think the size of both ships is about the same, so I could probably give it the same exact nacelles.

Ok, before I change out the nacelles, I wanted you to have a look at this....

Should I go with no nosepiece? Also, I lengthened the nacelles as requested. I will try one more nacelle edit (upsized the buzzards a bit), and if you guys still dont like it I will consider using a modification of the Falcon nacelles instead.

I like this nose bit, definitely good to have a bit of a breakup. I like the nacelles, but you are right it does need a bigger bussard collector.

Ok, I completely rebuilt the nacelle head. I tried to do a Defiant-like intake for the bussards, but it doesnt seem to work on a large ship as you can see.

I kept the fins, due to the fact that the fins contain shield generators to protect the busards from damage....after all, nacelles are the weakest part of Fed ships. I also reduced the forward length slightly, but can put it back where it was if you think it still doesnt look right.

I may tweak the nacelles a bit more, but you get the idea.

I can make them longer......I would prefer not to make them wider, because they sit inside the trench to protect them from fire. I am open to all suggestions of course.

But yes, I am happy with the changes as well. I see what you meant...the small intakes did not work.

perhaps longer or even something a bit broken up say something in the trench between the bussards and warp grill

I planned on adding greeblies inside the trench between the warp plasma vent and the bussard on the front. The colors on the skinny mesh now are just for show, to give you an idea of where everything will go.

Longer would be good ..  possibly make them AND the trench wider just behind the bussard area (somewhat tear drop style).  Also ..  dunno if you want to do anything to indicate a nacelle cap on the front end  (behind the bussards as well)  or not!

Just a thought or two.  Frankly it's kinda hard to add anything to the work you have done.  The changes you have made are excellent !

I could try that......I'm guessing you mean a cap ala galaxy style? like a trench running around the nacelle just behind the bussards. I could also try widening the trench as well, and making it longer. Let me see what I can do.

Ok, i made three more changes...two I like, one I dont.

First, the wider trench moving back to make the plasma vent wider works for me. It looks good, and doesnt take away from my original "in trench" idea. Second, the longer front is ok....not wild about it, but it still works.

I have to say I dont like the trenches on the side of the nacelles though. I think it breaks up the overall "pod" feeling of the nacelle. My intent was threefold with the nacelles...I wanted an ovoid shape to carry a galaxy cue, a minimized bussard to give cues to the intrepid, and the overall one piece design of the Sov nacelles...getting away from the head trench that the Intrepid and the Galaxy had. The trench doesnt work in my opinion, but Ill leave it up to you guys.

Yes ...  exactly ..  but make it your own style !  AND .. right behind that cap ( IMHO ) ..   should be the widest point on that trench.  leave the width the same on the bussards ...  and use that width (on the bussards) as the final width at the opposite end of the nacelle.

If the change does not look right ..   just post a note ..   it might not be the right affect to what your design needs.

Ah, i get what your saying. I actually scrapped the deep trench and tried something else....sort of a comprimise between what you guys wanted and what I wanted. Let me know how it looks now.

I also lengthened the nacelle closer to what you guys wanted. I might widen the pseudo-trench on the sides of the nacelle a bit, it looks a bit too small at the moment. But I can live with it now since it doesnt crawl up on the top of the nacelle, keeping the overall smooth ovoid look.

Sorry, lots of pics in this thread  :P
