Hey alec, what version of max do you use?

Only one that I've ever had.. r3.1  :)  Works fine for SFC, or even BC if I was so inclined, plus Freedom Force, almost anything.. plus runs on my laptop with 256mb of memory, and also my old W95 machine that's 300mhz.  ;)
..ooOOoo..totally useless information..ooOOoo..

-=whistles=- I dunno if i should smack you or shake your hand, lol.
Okay, I was gonna send you my studio and workshop MAX files, but I'm using Max9... so not so much, lol.
I gotta say though, its cool you can work with that, its expensive to maintain a top-of-the-line machine.

pwnsome :>

Actually there is a planet in the Federation that lives like the Romans and these are absolutely perfect for them. I saw ithem in the Galactopedia.

It's always worked for me for what I need it for, so I've never needed to even look at r4.  And once we get higher than 5, it breaks the SFC plugins anyways..

But either exporting as .3ds or .OBJ may (or may not) retain lighting information and such..

Should the block-bits on the top be paint or raised panels?

I'd say make the gray ones raised and the yellow ones lowered.

YUp, something like that, but make the Yellow panels shading colors the same as the panel too. Gonna look better ;)

When you do a bevel effect, two colors are used for the shading that gives the inset look (black and white by default). Now, instead of black and white, use the panel's color, it will look a lot better.

Underside

I'm not too sure on the gold anymore.
I am going to keep it, but its going to be the Imperial skin, a flagship of sorts. Still need to do something for the standard fleet. Also means that these are the wrong banner for the Imperial Flagship.

Actually, there isnt a bevel on it at all. The way i did it was to keep it looking GI-like. Allow me to explain.
There is a down panel and an up panel, right?
The Up panel gets a Black outer-glow on Multiply and a White Inner-glow on Overlay.
The Down Panel gets a white Outer-Glow on overlay (smaller than the up panel) and a Black Inner-Glow on Multiply.
The Multiply is for the diffused GI shadow, the overlays is a semi-highlight and semi wear-and-tear. A white overlay on the gold creates a brighter and lighter yellow so in essence i already did that, lol. I don't know if the render I uploaded reflected that, though.

Alright, I'm really not happy with this.
The mapping is all wrong and the textures really don't feel real. Right now I am using a 2048x1024 for the main body and some of the rims are only about 4 pixels tall. I shouldn't have to struggle with that this much.
50/50 the mapping is going to be redone - and that means the textures too.

I am looking into getting some information together about texturing for scale and realism and start a symposium of sorts, to help people make more realistic and appealing textures.

Progress! that is after another restart. I like it a lot more. Biggest difference is I did the math and found out how big a pixel of the texture is to the model.

That's coming out really good, man!!! What sort of scale (How many meters?) are you working on with it?

Yes it is very homeworld-ish isn't it.

I'm thinking about dumping it AGAIN, and doing over. Problem is its just too busy, too much clustered together. The base texture is still salvagable, its just the details are too compactly placed.

The ship is 1.2km long. on the texture I am working on a meter is 4 pixels tall, and I am building the texture in 2048x2048, so that says a lot.
